neoclassical details in Wimpole Hall
This is a view looking up from the main staircase in Wimpole Hall, Cambridgeshire. It shows the first floor landing and the skylight above, which are decorated with neoclassical motifs. The skylight was designed by Sir John Soane in the 1790s while the rococo plasterwork flowers and garlands were created by Henry Flitcroft.
Wimpole Hall as seen today is the result of successive adaptations to the original house first built in the 1640s for Sir Thomas Chicheley. Following several centuries under the ownership of the Earls of Hardwicke, it was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1976.
