346th Transportation Battalion Change of Responsibility
Ceiba, Puerto Rico- Sgt. Maj. Francisco Mari relinquished his duties as the 346th Transportation Battalion senior noncommissioned officer to Command Sgt. Maj. Luis Figueroa, during a change of responsibility ceremony celebrated Oct 21 2012, at the Battalion headquarters.
Troops assigned to the largest military unit left in the former Roosevelt Roads Navy base, witnessed the ceremony, as it closes and opens a chapter in the history of the 346th Transportation Battalion.
The change of responsibility is a simple traditional event that is rich with symbolism and heritage. Key to the ceremony is the changing of position of responsibility between the outgoing and incoming Senior Noncommissioned Officers.
The Battalion Command Sgt. Maj. is the custodian of the unit Guidon and as such, he is the senior enlisted advisor in the battalion and the principal advisor to the Commander on all areas of the unit’s operations. Therefore he assumes his position next to the unit Guidon. In the earliest of times, leaders used a banner or other symbols to identify themselves and to use them as rallying point for their warriors. For the modern day Soldier, his or her unit colors, the company Guidon, records the unit’s history, its glories, its battle, and its Campaigns. (Photos by Spec. Jose Carraquillo, UPAR 390th TC Co)
