The male sea lion, named Submarine, is the largest bull of the La Jolla Cove colony - which during pupping season consists of about 250-300 individuals. Local guides say he's a very good father and when the mothers are not around (when they have to go feed themselves), he shelters his babies or moves them further onshore during rough sea conditions. Puppies cannot swim until the age of 3 months old. Submarine weighs about 1000 pounds!
