Attending HKU for many Hong Kong students is a dream. For many decades until the 1990s, Hong Kong only had two universities: The University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Competition was so fierce that a straigh-A student still needed to enter a ballot. For years only the very top students with the best of luck won the chance to be educated in HKU. That slim chance also explained why historically so many Hong Kong parents send their kids overseas to get post-secondary education.
