Down by the river. River Teme and Ludlow Castle from Dinham Bridge, Shropshire, England.

Commentary.

A tributary of the River Severn, the River Teme flows around a rocky bluff upon which stands the proud and ancient Ludlow Castle, in the green, hilly and rural countryside of Shropshire.

Whitcliffe to the south-west provides a spectacular view of

castle, river and town.

The bridge had a predecessor for centuries but was rebuilt in the early 19th. Century.

The road across it passed through one of several “gates” into the fortified town.

Alas, Dinham Gate was demolished in 1786 and all the others

met the same fate at various times, bar one, Broad Gate, which still stands, a little to the east.

The tree-sheltered and grassy banks of the river now provide a superb environment for river-side-walks, restaurants, Public Houses and picnic sites.

Children toe-dip and skim stones in the shallow pools nearby.

An historic, secluded, beautiful environment on the fringe of, probably, “the loveliest town in England.”
