PRS_062 Veste Papyrus, Karl Lagerfeld - Chloé, 1972-1973

Karl Lagerfeld's inspiration for the centre of this shirt-jacket came from the flowing lines of the Rococo style, strictly framed by a very 18th-century pink and gold brown striped pattern. Here we find the sort of virtuoso embellishments that pervaded objets d'art from the 1730s to the 1750s, such as the incredible andirons made by François-Thomas Germain, which Pablo Picasso tried to acquire. Karl Lagerfeld, who drew inspiration from the Duc de Choiseul's snuffbox, already possessed a thorough knowledge of this type of objet a decade before he began collecting seriously in the 1980s.

'Papyrus' jacket, silk satin hand-painted by Nicole Lefort and embroidered with beads, rhinestones and metallic threads; crepe de chine skirt, modern reproduction by Atelier Chloé.
