PRS_093 Robe de bal, Demna - Balenciaga, 2020
Ball gown, bonded velvet
This crinoline dress in bonded velvet is abstract, airy and light, wavering somewhere between inspiration from the Second Empire and a kind of floating body. The reference to Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895-1972) is as striking as the gown's sculp- tural shape and aesthetic lines. Demna explained the spirit of this ball gown to the press in this manner: 'Ball gowns take us back to the early days of Balenciaga, when Cristóbal started designing in Spain. [...] But we wanted to make sure they were wearable dresses: if you remove the crinoline, you are left with a kind of gothic dress'.
