History of the Institute

The Vienna Sociology is based on a long tradition of humanities and social science research. Research programs such as the development of a phenomenological sociology of Alfred Schutz, the epistemological works of the Vienna Circle around Otto Neurath or empirical studies such as "The Unemployed of Marienthal" by Paul Lazarsfeld, Marie Jahoda and Hans Zeisel had great influence on the development of our discipline. This tradition was abruptly interrupted by the Nazis - important social scientists (women and men) had to leave Austria and continued their research in exile.

Marie Jahoda

In 1950 a chair of sociology at the Faculty of Law and Political Science at the University of Vienna was set up and occupied by August M. Knoll. 1954 saw the founding of the social science research center under the direction of Leopold Rosenmayr, who was appointed in 1963 to the chair of sociology.

Since 1966 consists within the framework of the Social and Economic Faculty of the University of Vienna the possibility to graduate sociology as an independent study. 1971 also at the Faculty of Arts a chair of sociology was set up. At this chair Erich Bodzenta was appointed. Two years later it was decided to set up at the former Basic Historical and Integrative Sciences the pilot program sociology, which was embedded in the humanities subjects. Thus, there were from 1973 at the University of Vienna two institutes of Sociology, each of them attending an own course of study with different focuses.

As part of the university reform, the two historically evolved institutions were merged in 2000. Then in 2007 came the beginning of an integrated curriculum. Since then, the sociological research and teaching at the University of Vienna is re-established under the umbrella of a common scientific institution with standardized courses.
