Start 'er up! (1)

Emanuele Pirro gives the signal for his crew to engage the compressed air starter to the BMW-Mader engine in his F2 March 842. The date is 30.3.84, and it is the International Trophy pre-practice day at Silverstone where rain overnight has left the track damp and the car is shod in full wets. Although he qualified third against the dominant Ralts, it was his first start in F2 and he made a mess of it due to conflicting but well-meant advice! Losing nine places instantly, he did well to recover and claim sixth spot.

Emanuele moved on to F1 from 1989-1991 in the Benetton and Scuderia Italia teams, scoring three WC points along the way. He will be much better remembered for his amazing record at Le Mans, winning no less the five times for Audi, 2000-2 in the Audi R8, and 2006-7 in the Audi R10. He will also remain in the record books as the driver of the first diesel-powered car to win at Le Sarthe.
