Castle Szigliget

The castle is loceted on a small hill, north of the lake Balaton. Like many Hungarian castles, Szigliget was also built in the 13th century, after the Mongol invasion. The castle played an important role in the Ottoman-Hungarian wars (XVI-XVIIth century), when the lake Balaton separated the Ottoman Empire from the Kingdom of Hungary. Szigliget was one of the bases of the small galley fleet, that often raided the southern - turkish - shore of the lake. With the liberation of Hungary from the Ottoman rule, the castle lost its importance. At the and of the 17th century a lighning stroke the magazine tower, seriously damaging the castle. The ruins ve recently renovated.
