Putnam Family Sampler, Campanelli Collection

This Grafton, Massachusetts, family register with a floral vine border lists parents’ names, birth, and marriage, plus birth information for eleven children. Death dates for two children were stitched when the sampler was made, and deaths of every other member were added at a later date, by several hands over time. The sampler, which records the genealogy of John Putnam and Anna R. Wheeler, is attributed to one of the last two children born, Mary (1814-1877) or Abigail (1817-1843), giving the creation date of circa 1830. John Putnam’s ancestry can be traced back to Deacon Edward Putnam, who was a prominent player in the Salem Witch Trials. From the collection of Dan & Marty Campanelli.
