Gold Hill

On Monday I visited Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, a place I'd wanted to visit for a long time. Gold Hill AKA Hovis Hill was made famous by film director Ridley Scott who used it as the setting for his 1973 advert for Hovis Bread (I'll add a link to the advert in the comments).

The ancient cobbled street runs beside the Grade I listed walls of the ancient Shaftesbury Abbey built by King Alfred the Great; the origins of the wall are not known, but it is presumed to have been built in the 1360s, when the abbess or other authority was given royal permission to build town defences.

It's a very popular spot with tourists and I can see why, it's such a beautiful hill, with its quintessential thatched cottages, and The tea room at the top of the hill does a gorgeous bit of coffee and walnut cake!!

Unfortunately, the weather wasn't the best, it was lovely as we left Poole but as we got to Shaftesbury it had clouded over a bit ruining the gorgeous views of the landscape in the far distance.

I didn't have a boy on a bike with a basket of bread to add a human element to this photo but I did have this young mum and her son venturing down the hill, I'm not sure if it adds to the shot but I'll let you decide.
