Eriolobus trilobatus
This is a lovely small tree or large shrub (from northern Greece i understand), often included in the genus Malus but in many ways it more like a scaled-up Crataegus with the lobed leaves and clawed petals. This part of the Rosaceae (the maloideae) seems to be in some disaray, with Sorbus on the verge of being broken up (the white beams and service trees are not closely related to the rowans apparently) so who knows where this might end up. Anyway it's one of the best small trees that I know of. The flowers are more than 1inch across and followed by small brownish apples. The autumn colour is very good.
Finally becoming popular after it was featured yonks ago in Roy Lancaster's Garden Plants for Connoisseurs. The perfect small tree for shape, flowers and autumn foliage.
