The date stone for Burton Memorial Hall was laid on July 21, 1956, by James Caunt, esq., J.P., the editor of the Morecambe Visitor newspaper, who lived in Burton at the time. Fundraising for the Hall had begun 16 years before during the early days of the Second World War. A plaque inside bears the inscription: Burton Memorial Hall Built by public subscription in appreciation of the men and women of the parish who served in the defence of their country. Opened by C.W.I. Penrhyn-Hornby Esq., 18th May 1957
The Memorial Hall has been extended since 1957 and now comprises the main hall, two meeting rooms, a doctor's surgery, and several store rooms. It is one of the busiest village halls in the area, being used daily by groups ranging in age from Pre-School to Pensioners, and encompassing all forms of sports, leisure and recreation, as well as frequent fund-raising events.
2006 saw the Golden Jubilee of the Memorial Hall and this was celebrated by a week of events from 8-15 July 2006. Many hall users extended an open welcome to new members and taster sessions and extra activities took place.
2011 sees the Hall as a finalist in the ITV Border region of the Jubilee People's Millions contest, when we are seeking public support for our project Kosy Komfy Kidz in the telephone vote on Tuesday 28 June between 9am and 12 midnight.
We were successful in our bid to win £60,000 from the BIG Lottery under their Jubilee People's Millions programme in 2011, and this is now being used, along with extra funds from the Hall's reserves to provide new heating and lighting systems for the Hall, plus a new pre-school toilet for use by the smallest children.
In 2019 we were able to have the north end extension reroofed, thanks to a grant from the National Lottery Fund. In 2021 we reroofed the south end extension to match. In 2022 we are working towards restoring the central hall's pitched metal roof and repairing the car park, along with a refurbishment of the Reception Room kitchen.
Other work planned includes the replacement of the main hall floor, and the installation of solar panels to provide electricity for the hall.
The Hall is located in the centre of the village of Burton-in-Kendal, on the west side of the A6070. Our What3Words
location code is fines.sock.essential. This takes you to the entrance to the Hall's car park on the A6070 opposite the south entrance to the Hall.
NB Images from CraftMarket, a fund-raiser in aid of the Hall have now been moved to their own account. Search for bmh_craftmarket on Flickr to find them.
