Where do you love to take pictures? In which country can we find the nicest cemetaries? What kind of style do you like?
Doctor Beef Posted 20 years ago
I don't know if it's a question of who has the nicest, really. I think every place has great cemeteries (which is proven each time I see photos from you all in different locations)!

I personally have only ever photographed cemeteries in the Chicagoland area, various areas in England and one in Ireland.

I personally am not overly fond of the more recent cemeteries in which the stones are kind of all the same modern style. What I really love is that each graveyard I've visited seems to have its own personality, in terms of memorials, landscapes and underlying feel.

That last one is sometimes the most intriguing - for example, we have three cemeteries within a very short distance. One's on one side of a busy street. Across is a second one. Right next to that, separated by only a chain link fence, is a third.

The first is extremely peaceful and serene, overwhelmingly beautiful; in fact, you rarely even hear the sound of the busy city traffic just beyond the cemetery walls.

The second, across the street, is also very peaceful, quiet. It's not nearly as beautiful as the first, simply because it's not as upscale, but it's still quite lovely.

Directly on the other side of that chain link fence, however, there's a strange feeling. The cemetery is mostly pretty, but has strangely unkempt areas on either side, while the middle is very well groomed. There's a feeling of sadness at that one not featured at the other two, a feeling of unrest. I felt like I was being watched and kept looking over my shoulder. I've never felt that way at the other two.

It's quite interesting, the differences.

I didn't mean the question competiotionwise...
I do love the differences in style.

I love highgate in London. highgate high is simply amazing. In that period people had a lot of fantasy and much more hidden symbols and meanings.
You can find a pyramid , a lion resting on the grave of his circus-master , the egyptin gallery. It was the worst weather ever.

Of course Paris has among the most famous ones. The cemetery monumental in Milano , Italy is simply so over the top , that it becomes fantastic. (but Italians are often getting very angry if your taking pictures.)

Belgium has some nice ones too. I like gothic style.

The Saadian graves in Marrakech , Morocco are very special as well.

Irish graves are intuiging for their patherns.

We can exchange tips , if we are travelling.

I just joined this group and I'll be posting some cemeteries from Mexico.

I posted a few photos from a Japanese cemetary on a mountain called Koya-san (example). One of my favourite places in the world.
Japanese cemetaries are a bit different since they're really not graveyards, but rather a place to leave a marker and a handfull of ashes...
Have also been to Highgate - it's cool, too.
I hope to add some more pics to the group soon. In the meantime, I'm just enjoying everyone else's beautiful shots!

Mine are strictly Midwest material, usually (not always) Catholic, and small-town to small city.

I love the Japanese ones. They seem quit special.

Today I posted some pics I took in a church in Florence. It are the graves from Da Vinci , Date etc...They are amazing. Not a cemetetary. But don't miss them if you are in Florence.

All of my photos currently are from in or around Huntsville, Alabama, which I live near. Most of my photos are from Maple Hill Cemetery, the oldest public cemetery in Alabama. The rest are from some of the smaller rural cemeteries of Madison County, AL, including a pet memorial park.

IMHO- the best are in Europe! I am lucky enough to have shot in Vienna, Budapest, and Prague, and I have never seen anything like it. The cemeteries there are like gardens with works of art. And not just the Victorian Era graves, but even recently deceased are dedicated with memorials that have amazing sculpture.
In the US, where I live, the best cemeteries are Catholic. That is because they usually have the best iconography.
Other than that, stick to the Victorian Cemeteries of the major cities, and you can't go wrong there.
