For decades the authenticity of these classic Spanish Civil War photographs has been debated. But a new study claims to have settled the argument -

As reported in the independant today.

So will the image lack credibility if it does turn out to have been faked? Robert Capa wasn’t the first and he won’t be the last to fake or stage a photograph in order to get the required image.

from the article: "To insist upon knowing whether the photograph actually shows a man at the moment he has been hit by a bullet is both morbid and trivializing, for the picture's greatness ultimately lies in its symbolic implications, not in its literal accuracy as a report on the death of a particular man." - Richard Whelan, Capa biographer

I agree with this. That said, I wouldn't agree with people faking/manipulating present-day images. But somehow, this image is a classic now and it's kind of irrelevant whether it was posed or real.

If you think about it, ALL IMAGES ARE 'POSED'. Not necessarily by the photographer.
UK TV Morecambe and Wise 'celebrity spot' featured Andrew Preview conducting an orchestra whilst Eric Morecambe played the piano. AP stopped the band to complain to EM that he was playing all the wrong notes. EM's response was that he was playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order.
The candid shooter needs to see the potential in an ocurence then wait until all the elements come together (are posed) and grab the moment.
Witness HCB's man jumping the puddle. He could see something would happen as man realised his problem and was ready for whatever - SNAP.

Carpe diem as the romans used to say:D
