Just wondering where the good places to watch the fireworks are in Cleveland (I have never been downtown for them). Or are there any suburbs of Cleveland that have particularly good fireworks?

You and I both know that is true (especially for a lil city) since we are from there.

The best place to watch them downtown is either from Whiskey Island or from the Superior Viaduct. I'll try to scare up some photos of both for you.
where do they fire them?
When I was a Kid they did them from a barge off edgewater beach.
I know jacob's field will have them.

Euclid, at the high school.
maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=tracy+ave+euclid...
I always thought they had some decent displays.
Be warned, traffic can get real bad.

If you go to Wickliffe's and then run out to Bishop road, you can watch the end of the Euclid fireworks. Not a terrible view and it is kinda like a bonus finale.
Cleveland proper's fireworks have been hit or miss.
Depending on where they blow'em off (the location of which changes yearly) Edgewater area is no longer used (so I've been told)
Last year, they were set off somewhere along the Cuyahoga.
Tremont and surrounding areas (think below the 90/71 bridges) facing downtown are good vantage points for the fireworks on the 4th (and after games at the Jake) although, you may get alot of light noise.
I would think being in a boat on the lake would be the best location
for seeing all the cities that are nearest to the lake (From Lorain to Mentor)
Maybe somewhere near Steelyard Commons?
Really, it all depends on the location where they shoot'em off.
