Alkyd Oils

Hello All,
About a year ago I ordered some Gamblin Alkyd paints and promised myself I would do some alkyd painting. Finally this week, I have started using the alkyds. After an initial frustration that they don't handle exactly like oils, I decided I like them. I think I will be doing a lot more alkyd painting in future. So I started a group for Alkyd Landscapes. I hope those of you who have an interest in alkyd painting will join. Right now membership is open to anyone with an interest in the medium. So this is a good time to join.
Also, if you have some landscapes painted in alkyd, please join and post them in the group. My alkyd paintings aren't ready to post yet. Some small ones are almost finished, quick work I started just to have some things to post. The alkyd paintings I found through a search have not been posted in any groups and apparently the people who painted them don't participate in groups. I invited some work anyway and a couple of paintings have been posted.
I really think Flickr needs an Alkyd Landscape group to help encourage artists to try the medium and display their alkyd landscapes together.

For those of you who have not tried the medium,I highly recommend it.
It is very fast drying but has much of the same working quality as oil. Usually you won't need to wait more than a day or two until it is dry enough to work on. These small ones I am doing have been dry to the touch within hours. That is a marvelous advantage.

Another advantage is the transparency when used with Liquin and gel mediums that are traditionally used with alkyd medium in place of linseed oil. Fast drying time and transparency add up to wonderful possibilities for glazing techniques.

You can also use walnut oil as a medium to slow drying time or you can use the walnut oil/alkyd medium for fast drying. Gamblin makes a solvent free oil medium also that can be used with alkyds.

For now, instead of going solvent free, I'm using gum spirits of turpentine as a thinner along with the original Liquin medium. I will be using different mediums with the alkyds in future and this winter may go solvent free when I am indoors more. Right now I'm working outdoors.

I would like to hear from others about their experiences with using alkyd and also any tips or helpful hints they have to share.

And please hop over and join the group!
