Sir Thomas Chicheley of Wimpole 1578-1616
"Here resteth in assurance to rise in Christ Sr Thomas Chicheley of Wimpole, Knight, sometimes Lord of the Towne, and patron of this Church, son of Thomas Chicheley Esq and Anne his wife, daughter of Sr John Bourne, who was Secretary to Queen Mary and of her Privie Council. The which Sr Thomas married Dorothie, one of the daughters and co-heiress of Sr Thomas Kempe of Ollanteygh in the county of Kent, Knight, by whom he was made the joyful father of six children, Dorothie, Anna, Jane, Thomas, Henry, and John. He left this life 12 Nov. in the year of Our Lord 1616, being the 38 year of his age, to whose dear memory Dorothie his wife hath piously erected this monument."
He was the son of Thomas Chicheley 1592 & Anne daughter of Sir John Bourne by Dorothy daughter of Richard Lygon
He m 1607 Dorothy 1644 co-heiress with 3 sisters of Sir Thomas Kempe 1607 of Olantigh,Wye. 4. John b1616 born 5 weeks before his father's death
The core of the Chicheley family’s Wimpole estate was acquired in 1428 by Henry Chichele, Archbishop of Canterbury who in 1436 settled Wimpole on his great nephew, Henry Chicheley, whose lineal descendants had expanded their holdings by the early 117c to include 4 of Wimpole’s 6 manors and all 3 manors in the neighbouring parish of Wendy
Sir Thomas returned home where, in November 1615, he paid John Wingfield £800 for a lease of Claydon’s manor in Wimpole, comprising 620 acres ‘Sick and in great weakness of body’, he drew up his will on 29th October 1616, in which he required all his property, including lands leased out to two Cambridge colleges, to be held for his young children until they came of age.
His son & heir Thomas was aged two years when his father died. His wardship was purchased in 1617 for a cash down-payment of £450 and an annual rent of £46 by his mother Dorothy, and his cousin John Piggott, both of whom were also executors of his will.. His soon was Chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster and MP, He built Wimpole Hall, however his "extravagant" lifestyle led him to sell the estates in 1686 (his body being returned in 1699 to be interred in the family vault here).
