At the time of the dissolution of the monasteries, Thomas brought the old Ros tombs from Belvoir Priory BUT systematically destroyed Rievaulx abbey - An inventory of its building & fittings was made shortly after he acquired it, and seeking a return on his investment he sold the roof timbers and fittings. The stained glass was divided into 3 categories: the best quality was to be kept, the second best sold & the leads salvaged from the poorest.
His was the first Manners burial here - the tomb was created by Richard Parker of Burton on Trent, with John Lupton (rough mason) and his father. The body was embalmed with spices from Nottingham and encased in wax. A plumber then encased it in a close fitting leaden shell. Masons also had to strengthen the Chancel floor ! - Church of St Mary the Virgin Bottesford Leicestershire
