CIAO Invitational Catalog

So let's see if I can tell this story in a reasonable amount of time...

As some of you know, Peoria recently opened a project years in the making - the Peoria Riverfront Museum. To kick off this huge project, the museum, in collaboration with the Central Illinois Artist's Organziation (CIAO), gave the first major exhibition in the museum over to local artists. Last summer, a call for art went out and over 200 artists from all mediums in and around Central Illinois submitted over 500 pieces for consideration. The jury selected one piece from 75 of the artists and those works debuted with the museum grand opening back in late October. My piece, Mackinaw River Valley Sunrise, 2010 was picked as one of the pieces.

The museum produced an absolutely wonderful catalog of the 75 artists and their work, along with the complete story on how we got here and on how vibrant the arts scene is in Central Illinois. It's a privilege to be featured with some of the best artists in the region, and if you get your lazy butt down to the new Peoria Riverfront Museum, you can see this piece and the others, until sometime in March. Also kudos to museum CEO Jim Richardson, catalog designer Chris Tobin (who did an outstanding job), Director of Museum Collections Kristan McKinsey, CIAO heroes (and Central Illinois ArtsPartners of the Year) Doug and Eileen Leunig, and the wonderful jury for organizing a very impressive show, even though they let me in too... suckers.

Also, of the 75 pieces submitted, 21 (almost 1/3) are photographs, including besides myself, Christian Arrecis, Roger Bean, David Benko, Matt Buedel, Brandon Carpenter, Ann Conver, Cheryl Dean, Julie Dodge, Don Forrest, Barb Hoffman, Ken Kiley, Natalie Jackson O'Neal, Kyle Plattner, Tom Romanowski, Nyla Salem, my Delavan neighbor Craig Stocks, Marcia Straub, Joel Timm, Nick Welsch, and David Zalaznik.

Photography is kicking ass in Central Illinois.
