Joe Campbell Monument

The fighting gradually moved Southward as both sides fed more troops into the slaughter. Command and control went to individual regiments as they stumbled through thick forests. The division of Brig Gen Absalom Baird was moved up by Thomas, driving back Wilson's and Ector's Confederate forces. This was countered by Bragg, who sent the division of Brig Gen St. John Liddell smashing into Baird's flank, driving it back in confusion. Liddell was in turn thrown back by Brannan's exhausted troops.

Maj Gen Benajmin Cheatham's Confederate division was then moved up, and finally drove back Col John Croxton's brigade. As Croxton withdrew, his brigade was replaced by the division of Brig Gen Richard Johnson, whose brigades, under Col Philemon Baldwin and Brig Gen August Willich drove back first Brig Gen John Jackson's brigade, then Brig Gen George Maney's small brigade with heavy losses. The color-bearer of the 1st Tennessee, Private Joseph Campbell was killed during that exchange.
