penny university, on the blue hour

In sad news Penny U. is going to close on July 30th. Go and pay them a visit before it's too late!

In other, much better news, it's the photo prints for coffee beans swap!

Owner/Barista Mouss was there to greet me when I dropped by. He's friendly and awesome. They were having taste testing then as they were still calibrating the beans and machine, I think, so while we were waiting for him to make me a latte to try, I had a great chat with him and his friend.

In the foreground is the selection of mugs/cups that Penny Uni will be using. The tiniest ones are of course, for the espresso-type shots and the ones closest to the edge are for lattes and other larger drinks.

From top down: A segment of the rustic corkboard menu, that offers coffee and tea drinks, as well as a selection of breakfast foods and baked goods; milky latte with pretty heart latte art; the coffee shop's name card, with the centre 'penny' round being embossed into the white card.

Here's the cafe's shopfront, featuring the house bike, a red vintage-y Raleigh. A little more to the right is the take-out window, which I've already observed some people using to make enquiries or orders.

That's all from my visit! Penny University is already opened and can be contacted on their Facebook page. Whether you're an Eastie, do drop by this indie coffee joint to find out more for yourself!

I love this shot for how it made Mouss look like a part of the Raven blend's dispenser.

Cafe latte's ready! It's made using the Raven blend, a mix of Brazilian and Indian beans. I was delighted to see the latte art heart. <3

A new cafe has opened along East Coast Road, in the stretch between Still Road and Telok Kurau Road. The glassy, minimalistic facade and bauhaus style interior was certainly enticing. With it being so close to my place, I just had to drop by.

Pictured here are Ed Charlton, the Write Group's resident publisher (regular visitors to my photostream already know about his Scribbulations company) with Joan Adams, another Write Group mainstay.

Ed writes science fiction but did not take part as a lecturer.

Judith took questions from the people gathered at the reading, and she was particularly asked to explain how, suddenly in the story, a booster for the town of North Malden appeared in Greenland to promote investment in his borough.

Ha ha! I'm just kidding, of course, and Monty Python fans will recognize that joke. I'm sure the Write Group's resident Englishman, Ed Charlton (seated at left) would.

After her saga, Judith was interviewed by Alan Whicker and other celebrity interviewers from Whicker Island with no one left to interview. I talked with the island's only white man, Father Pierre, and found that he chose to stay there mainly for the interviews!

And so from Whicker Island, part of a crumbling empire in the sun-drenched Caribbean, where the clichés sparkle on the waters like repeat fees, it's fare . . . well, and bon . . . voy . . .age! :-D

Yeah, right.

Nancy Willis is another regular member of the Write Group. She participated in the free write and read what she wrote. The woman to the right is named Lynn; her last name slips my mind.

Arlene thought up all the "prompts" - the words and phrases to write to.

Arlene McCarren, a member of the Write Group of Montclair, hosts a monthly free write session in the Singac section of nearby Little Falls at the Fine Grind coffee house as part of the coffee house's "Penny University" series of lectures, book readings, and intellectual activities.

A free write session is where someone suggests a word or phrase and everyone writes for fifteen minutes based on that word or phrase.

As Arlene (left, background) listens, Joe Del Priore, the Write Group's resident enfant horrible, reads one of his weird and wacky stories.

The Penny University series at the Fine Grind in Little Falls, New Jersey, continued on April 26, 2010, with a discussion on memoir writing. Here, Katinka Neuhof (with the microphone), a member of the Montclair (N.J.) Wrtite Group's "Memoirs and Muffins" memoir subgroup, reads her piece while fellow Write Grouper Josie Zeman listens.

Canberra has discovered its Hipster vibe and Kingston finally jumped on the bandwagon. This place has decent coffee and good food. Do try Penny University on Kennedy Street in Kingston, Canberra.

Carl Selinger (left) is a mainstay of the Write Group of Montclair. Here he is reading one of his free write pieces from the Penny University session at the Fine Grind in Little Falls while Jacqueline Stearns (right) listens.

Penny University is what the Fine Grind Coffeehouse in the Singac section of Little Falls, New Jersey, calls its author's lecture series, held once a month on a Monday. For March - March 22 , to be exact - the Fine Grind featured two members of the Write Group of Montclair, New Jersey, Jeanne margolskee (left) and Richard Herr.

Jeanne and Richard are science fiction writers, and they spoke on the genre.
