The Norfolk Southern Office Car Special runs North past Montpelier on October 31 2015. I love the F units

The RDPU of manifest train 10G heads eastbound through Cresson, as it passes a tied down empty grain train NS 54K that awaits a RJ Corman crew to take it north.

Starting a lightning fast three hour run between Chattanooga, Tennessee and Atlanta, Georgia, NS 951 gets its first steam salute from TVRM's SOU #4501.

The Norfolk Southern executive train spent time in the St. Louis area during the week of Sept. 4, 2016. It returned to its home base in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 10-11, crossing Ohio on a Sunday afternoon. My friend Marty and I got wind of the OCS and Marty's nephew Henry was chasing it near Cleveland. He gave us periodic updates of the train's progress. Marty and I were out on the NS Fort Wayne Line east of Alliance, Ohio, and elected to get the train coming through Salem.

By the end of our Virginia trip, we'd gotten a pretty decent haul of shots and signals, but one had eluded us for a while. Vesuvius, a signal in a phone-signal-less valley with a very, very narrow margin in which light works with the signal. We'd started with three of us in the car, one leaving us the day before, and today, the other would be heading home. He had a train to catch in Roanoke, but both of us had a train to catch on the H-Line - NS 14Z. We shot him at Lithia and Arcadia, and the math seemed to line up for good enough light at Vesuvius... which was almost an hour away.

With an eye on the clock, we raced north, arriving at CP Vesuvius to find it red. We waited and waited, and just as it seemed like we were gonna have to call it to get back to Roanoke in time for Audie's train home, the signal upgraded to yellow. A minute later, the railfan we met at Arcadia pulled up and told us 14Z was real close. We made the choice to grab our shot here and then book it south afterwards.

Lo and behold, 14Z was on us within ten minutes and blasted through into the only technically doubled tracked portion of the H-Line. NS4275 is in fact the DPU on 14Z, making this shot an incredibly cheeky going-away shot. Considering how difficult traffic is on this line though, and the lack of EOTD, I'm okay with it.

This wound up being the last shot of the trip. We returned to Roanoke in time for Amtrak, then I was on my own. No more trains rolled up or down the Roanoke District until the next morning, but by then I was on my way back home.

Vesuvius and the rest of the H-Line and even the other nearby lines that retain some of these classic CPLs are on the chopping block for replacement with new signals. I don't expect to be able to make it back far enough that way in time to shoot them again, making this probably the last photo I'll get of a train at a CPL. Even if NS doesn't cut them down as soon as is expected, I'll be losing my job by the end of the year. It's not likely I'll find a place as generous with time off as this, and seeing as my newly-married wife and I live in different countries and need time off work to see each other... well, suffice to say, trains are gonna have to be a little more on the backburner, hah. You never know, but time will tell.

If this was indeed my last chance to see these signals, I think it ended pretty well.

Eastbound Norfolk Southern Business / Inspection train is approaching the old NYC depot at Momence, Illinois on August 5th, 2015, at 10:28 am with NS F9A #4270-F7B #4275-4276-F9A #4271 and 12 cars. It was a really cool train and fortunately I knew it was coming.

The Norfolk Southern executive train approaches the crossing of Ohio Route 9 (Mullins Street) in Salem, Ohio. On the point are NS F9A 4271, F7B 4275 and F9A 4270.

After sitting in Bellevue for the past few days due to storms/power outages in the Ohio/Indiana area, Norfolk Southern's Office Car Special (NS 955) finally arrives in Decatur, crossing the lake on the 1907-built concrete bridge. Would have shown more of the train, but 120 was departing east and its rear end barely cleared in time for this!

NS 4270, NS4275 and NS 4276 lead the 956 OCS at MP221 Plummers Hollow just east of Tyrone, PA. They are headed to Augusta, GA with seventeen cars.

NS4271 (F9A) , NS4275 (F9B), and NS4270 (F9A) locomotives pass eastbound through Berea, Ohio on a return trip to Conway, PA.

At the interchange between Amtrak and Strasburg Railroad

I had planned to take stills but the wind and rain kicked up at the last second in the direction I needed to point the camera so I took shelter behind the truck and filmed a sideways video instead. It's not the best but it is what it is-more of something to remember the day by instead of a great railroad video.

As it departs Strasburg RR on Sunday evening

"Office Car Special" Felt like a rock star on this very loud, noisy locomotive. There were many people taking pictures of us.

NS 4270 is one of two F7A on the NS roster, along with two F7Bs used for the business car train. One A unit and one B unit were on display at National Train Day.
