ANZCO locked out 100 sheep processing workers at their CMP Rangitikei plant on October 19 for refusing to accept up to 20% pay cuts, shift changes and reductions in allowances.

 

Dale Robinson has worked in the industry for 28 years and is a mutton slaughterman at AFFCO Wairoa. He was last involved in a dispute in 1986 which lasted for six weeks. He is the shed secretary.

 

“We are all in this together,” he says. “This dispute will affect everyone.”

Graham Ellery, 56, has worked in the industry for 27 years and works as a freezer hand at Alliance Timaru. He was involved in a very frustrating dispute six years ago. He is the shed president.

 

“I’m here because of principles,” he says. “This dispute could have a flow on effect.”

 

Graham told the locked out workers: “You hold the hopes of all meatworkers – thankyou!”

Trevor Topp, 54, has worked in the industry for 35 years and works as a freezer hand at Silverfern Farms Belfast near Christchurch. He was last involved in a dispute in 1990. He is the shed secretary.

 

“The ANZCO CMP workers have been treated unfairly,” he says.

 

Trevor told the locked out workers: “Hang in their people – our support is ongoing. We’ve had collections of over $1,000 in a short period of time.”

Katrina Murray has worked in the industry for seven years and works in the slaughter board at South Pacific Meats in Invercargill. She is the shed secretary.

 

Katrina told the locked out workers: “Kia Kaha – stay strong. I fully support you.”

Mark Fully, 39, has worked in the industry for 10 years and is a boner at Silverfern Farms Dunedin. He is the shed president.

 

“I support the ANZCO CMP workers because we should,” he says. “We all need to resist being bullied by the corporates.”

 

Mark told the locked out workers: “Well done ANZCO CMP workers – keep up the effort.”

 

Bill Karati has worked in the industry for 31 years and currently works as a mutton slaughterman at AFFCO Rangiuru in Te Puke. He is the shed secretary.

 

“It’s not right what’s happening to these workers,” he says. “It doesn’t affect me now, but if the company are succesful it will affect us all.”

Ashley Cooper, 65, has been working in the industry for 34 years and works in fancy meats at AFFCO Imlay in Wanganui. He is the shed secretary. He was last involved in a 6 week dispute in the 1980s.

 

“This sort of action by ANZCO CMP could be followed by other companies” he says.

John Ryan, 60, has worked in the industry for 39 years and works at Silverfern Farms Waitane near Gore. The last dispute he was involved in was a 7 week strike in 1989. He is the shed secretary.

 

“It’s about fairness for workers and resisting poor management schemes”, he says. “Any ill effects will spread like cancer in the industry.”

 

Laurie Nankivell has worked in the industry for 35 years and works at AFFCO Moerewa in the far north. The last dispute he was involved in was 25 years ago. He is the shed secretary.

 

“The ANZCO CMP dispute affects ALL meat workers.”

 

Wayne Downs, 52, has worked in the industry for 17 years and works as a knifehand at Silverfern Farms Waitotara in Wanganui. He is the shed secretary.

 

“I’m totally disgusted with ANZCO CMP,” he says. “These are our mates, brothers, sisters and comrades. The company refused to negotiate while the workers suffer.”
