Long Exposure: 10 stop neutral density filter + 6 stop neutral density filter -- ISO 100; 5 minutes, 31 seconds (331 seconds) at f/6.3; August 31, 2018, 5:46PM; Overcast sky, 90% clouds.
Note: With Long Exposure Auto Noise Reduction turned off, this camera (the Canon 5DSR) does not handle long exposures well (i.e. exposures of 5 minutes magnitude). Though hard to detect in this image, the noise in the dark area on the left, when viewed full size, is wholly objectionable, and doesn't respond well to noise reduction in post-production. However, the 30 second exposures as represented in some of the other images in this set do not show appreciable noise. Though doubly time consuming, my next efforts at long exposures of 5 minutes duration or more will involve turning on the the camera’s Long Exposure Auto Noise Reduction.
John Cook (fl.1730-1750) - A Royal Navy two-decker entering the harbour at Alexandria
A little-known artist, whose work is often confused with that of Peter Monamy, this painting is the only known work to be signed with the artist's full name, and adds further to our knowledge of him. He is best known for his scenes of the Mediterranean, usually off Alexandria, and a version of this painting, with minor differences, is in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, dated to circa 1720. The frequency with which he painted these subjects, and their quality, suggests that he spent a great deal of time in what were then little-known ports of the eastern Mediterranean, and he may, like other marine artists of his generation, have been a seaman.

"Thank God they cannot cut down the clouds." --Henry David Thoreau.
The history of temperature change over time is related to the shape of continents, the shape of the seafloor, the pulling apart of the crust, stitching back together of the crust, the opening and closing of seaways, changes in the Earth's orbit, changes in solar energy, supernoval eruptions, comet dust, impacts by comets and asteroids, volcanic activity, bacteria, soil formation, sedimentation, ocean currents and the chemistry of air. If we humans, in a fit of ego, think we can change these normal planetary processes, then we need stronger medication. -- Dr. Ian Plimer in his book Heaven and Earth, global warming, the missing science.
In 2004, John Cook won the City of Austin's GIS Day prize with this map of Austin Weirdness.
His weirdness metric was based on addresses from the Chronicle's Best of Austin and (if I remember correctly) the Austin Independent Business Alliance. Note that he included both a heat map and a rating by zip code. I think no one will be surprised that 78704 leads the zip codes!
Take a look at it in All Sizes or you can download the full-sized PDF.
Thanks to John for letting me post this. There's another Austin GIS Day coming up this Wednesday, November 8.
His nest is looking quite tidy in this photographic study compared to later years. Unknown date and location but definitely mid 1980s and certainly after a considerable amount of refreshment.
No John Cook is not Miss Croft - Griggs' date for the night. As if. Top 40 basher Beki was on one of her visits to Plymouth and this was the Bank pub in the centre of town. Under age drinker Adrian Jackson is in the bottom left. Also out that night on the pub and club crawl besides me were Mike Evans and Les Wearne.
John Cook aka Crowman aka The Crow will be turning 60 would you believe towards the end of 2019. Here he is in his youth outside Liverpool Street station in October 1983 after a heavy weekend trip to Amsterdam. Please feel free to add comments on him becoming a senior citizen.
A rare picture of The Crowman smiling. Looks like he is on the Dunkel. This was at one of the town's beer halls following an exceptional tour with a steam loco and the Lollo diesel hydraulic. I seem to recall Mr Slaney was on it too.
This is the early 90s I think at one of the earlier incarnations of The Chappel And Wakes Colne beer festival. This was one of my favourite festivals with a great atmosphere and music held in the East Anglian Railway Museum. The seating and table in the photo are inside their 1938 Bakerloo vehicles. Yet another photo of John Cook smiling. These will not do his image any good so for the purposes of balance I will eventually upload some of the countless photos I have of him looking miserable.
Every day was a bad hair day for Crowman and Anvil seen here on the sealink ferry from Portsmouth to Ryde .

Detail from John Cook's 2004 Keep Austin Weird Map.
I suppose you can't have avoided noticing that the zone of greatest weirdness bears a resemblance to the Austin Motel sign.
Thanks to John for letting me post this. There's another Austin GIS Day coming up this Wednesday, November 8.

First time I'd seen this layout and I think it is absolutely brilliant in terms of the quality of the modelling and finishing/weathering. It recreates how a working colliery railway in the Durham area might have looked drawing on more than one real life example. Marvellous!
