Nebraska’s Crawford Hill is famous for the huge horseshoe curve just below Belmont, but there is another photogenic curve below there east of Crawford. On July 7, 1996, an all-Cascade green consist of two EMD SD60Ms and two GE C30-7s works through the curve on the climb to Belmont pulling a train on a brand new BNSF that hasn’t infiltrated the image yet.

I did my first real hike of the year in the White Mountains over the weekend, Mount Willard is one of my favorites. It's quite an easy hike, and the reward in terms of view is pretty amazing. The "notch" as you see it is a deeply carved "valley" between two mountain chains. In the middle runs route 302.

A steep hike down the canyon walls leads to the lower falls. The path to the upper falls requires a treacherous rock climbing expedition which we will reserve for the younger generation.

This was the scene at Willey Brook from early October in 2016. Although it is one of the home roads for me I haven't yet checked up on the foliage in the notch this year, it seems the weather usually turns pretty sour the past couple of years when it peaks. Cory was at the throttle of this one to Fabyans and return with Mr. Grover riding shotgun.

A set of three Burlington Northern SD60Ms head downgrade back to Crawford, Nebraska, to push another coal load over Crawford Hill on July 21, 2003. A fuel tender is spliced into the power to lengthen the time between refueling for the busy helper set. Note the special device above the anti-climber on No. 9215 that lifts the pin allowing uncoupling of the helper on the fly at the summit at Belmont.

The heart of the park is the eponymous meromictic lake: Crawford Lake. The lake is deeper than its surface area, so the lowest levels of water are very rarely disturbed, and little oxygen reaches the lowest levels. It’s the unique qualities of a meromictic lake that led to an exciting discovery—where science unveiled local history. Researchers and scientists found ancient corn pollen deep in the sediment of the lake. The presence of corn meant settlements, and thus this began the research, which concluded, that First Nations groups settled in this area over six hundred years ago.

Arriving at the base of the falls. The falls are a good 20 feet high. I did try and negotiate with my wife to stand under the falls for perspective but cannot repeat her answer in a public forum. The path to the upper falls is to the left and would require a steep rock climb to the top of these falls then journey along the canyon bottom to the 60 foot falls. They tell me it's quite spectacular - i will take their word for it.

In the summer of 2003, Crawford Hill on BNSF’s Butte Subdivision out of Alliance, Nebraska, featured at least three sets of Cascade green three-window EMD SD60M helper sets, mostly equipped with a fuel tender. On July 22, 2003, a trio of these former BN EMDs rolls downgrade at Breezy Point just west of Belmont, heading back to Crawford after pushing a BNSF coal train over the grade.

After climbing 1,623 feet in elevation through the White Mountains along Maine Central's Mountain Division, Conway Scenic's premier train the "Mountaineer" dwells at 1,900 ft. Crawford Notch in north central New Hampshire on July 25, 2023. Locomotive 216 is former Norfolk & Western GP35 No. 1328, built by EMD in March 1965.

Coal trains without DP, bulldog helpers with fuel for days. If I saw it, it wasn't that long ago. IIRC there were 3 such helper sets working the hill that day and a line of eastbounds stacked up waiting for said helpers. Funny it seemed normal at the time.

Picture taken by me with a Lumix G1. 27/12/2012.... Crawford Castle, substantially in ruins, is located on the north bank of the River Clyde, around half a mile north of Crawford, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The ruins stand on an earlier motte and bailey earthwork. The castle was formerly known as Lindsay Tower, after its former owners, the Lindsay family. The strategic location of the castle guards the approach from England into the upper Clyde Valley.

On this occasion I was on my way from Inverness to Carlisle.

The Crawford Helper set returns westbound as seen from Breezy Point. Four SD60M's and a fuel Tender = an experience not to be repeated.

Crawford Priory is an impressive, Gothic mansion just outside the village of Springfield in Fife. It was started in 1809 and extended a few years later, but now a derelict and deteriorating shell. The present building replaced an earlier house that dated from the middle of the 18th century, and had a sumptuous interior.

Crawford Priory was built for the unwed Lady Mary Crawford, who in 1808 succeeded to the Lindsay-Crawford property and lands, on the death of her brother, the 22nd Earl of Crawford. Mary never married but she did have a large menagerie of animals, both pets and wild, in and around the mansion.
