Smile On Saturday-Trees In Silhouette

I snapped this at one of Stu's gigs in Watkins Glen, NY. It was such a lovely evening.

Another view from October. Taken on a small lake in Clute, Texas.

Tree-mendous Tuesday

Last summer we travelled to Watkins Glen for one of Stu's gigs. I snapped this as the sun was setting. The scenery in that area is so breathtaking.

This is one of several views of this sunset. Best viewed large! Ducks in the background.

We travelled to Watkins Glen this evening. Stu had a gig with The Ageless Jazz Band at Warren W. Clute Memorial Park. I got my new lens yesterday so brought it with me and I'm very happy with it.

A classic view of Seneca Lake from Clute Park, located in Watkins Glen, N.Y., U.S.A. Seneca is the largest of the Finger Lakes and is host to many sailing enthusiasts.

I took this just as we were leaving Stu's gig in Watkins Glen. This is the building that sits on the shore near Seneca Lake.

No groups invites, please, thank you. Thank you for your comments!

A storm cloud was quickly closing in on the sunset, but it did not rain. We are about 12 inches behind in rainfall.

The sun is still bright but there is a cloud coming in.

A basketball player at Clute Park coils up to launch himself at the rim, in an attempt to dunk. He was bragging how he could "dunk all day long on this rim". So, another player handed him a ball and threw down the challenge. He missed! Over and over again! White men can't jump! LOL!!!

Message reads: Your notice to me to call at your office for parcels by mail directed to me has been received and in reply ???? ???? that I paid "J.S. Clute (1)" of New Westminster Customs - the amount due on the night of Oct 1st 1881. I made inquiries of ????? in Victoria when there last Sept and May informed me that those parcels would be examined in New Westminster consequently I paid the amount due - to Mr. Chute. Hoping this will be a satisfactory explanation & awaiting the arrival of the parcels. I Remain Yours - A.E. Howse (2) - Nicola Nov 19th 1881.

(1) - John Stilwell Clute, inspector of customs at New Westminster, is a British Columbia pioneer of 1862. He was born near Kingston, Ontario, on the 15th of June, 1840. In 1866 Mr. Clute married Miss Jennie Clarkson, second daughter of Mr. William Clarkson, of New Westminster, a British Columbia pioneer of 1858. To Mr. and Mrs. Clute have been born nine children. Mr. Clute was appointed to the Customs Service as collector at the port of New Westminster in 1878, and in 1889 he had added to his duties as collector the office of inspector, he holding the dual positions until 1896, when he was at his own request relieved of the office of collector and assumed the office of inspector of ports for British Columbia. (2) - A. E. Howse - Albert Elgin Howse was born in Lincoln County, Ontario in 1855. He was the younger of two children born to Frederick Howse and Sarah Beamer. The Howse brick home had sixteen rooms. When William Lyon Mackenzie King, a prominent political leader and the tenth Prime Minister of Canada, had to go into hiding due to his political activity, he hid in a little room below the staircase. When young Albert was behaving badly his parents would frighten him by saying he would have to spend some time in “Mackenzie’s Hole.” When he turned 21, Howse left home with California as his final destination. He worked at a publishing company for a year until he heard about a little settlement at Douglas Lake in the Nicola Valley, British Columbia. In 1877 Howse made his way to Nicola and took up a piece of land there. He immediately began helping build a wagon road from Kamloops to Nicola Lake. His parents had raised him to be a hard working lad so he put in some very long hours with the road crew. In 1882 he partnered with George Petit and opened a general store in Nicola. He went on to open four more stores — one in Granite, Princeton, Hedley and finally Merritt. After two weeks in Princeton Hospital, Albert Elgin Howse passed away - 13 December 1938 at 83 years of age. “Earthquake McGoon’s was the longest-running traditional jazz club in San Francisco. Between 1960 and 1984, the featured act, Turk Murphy’s San Francisco Jazz Band, exposed many thousands to the joy and excitement of the San Francisco Style.

Originally located at 99 Broadway, the former site of the Sail’N and home base for the Bay City Jazz Band, the club was named after a character in Al Capp’s Li’l Abner comic strip. Capp gave Turk Murphy the permission to use the name, ‘as long as you keep your nose clean and play good jazz.’ Ward Kimball—Disney animator, trombonist/leader of the Firehouse Five Plus Two and longtime friend of Turk’s—designed the logo, a cartoon rendering of Turk, holding a pail containing a mangled trombone, and the tagline ‘I just happened to bring my horn.’

The club space was leased by Turk, in partnership with his longtime pianist Peter Clute.”
