It is with great delight that I post this picture after thinking that I had lost everything due to a hard drive crash (photos are on a different drive so I knew the originals were safe). While I thought I had everything backed up, my back program wasn't working properly.
My brother worked his magic and after freezing the hard-drive, then keeping it on ice, after about 6 hours, we were able to copy the corrupted C-drive across to the new one, via a laptop, then a portable HD then back to my computer for almost complete recovery. Have had to reinstall everything, but so far so good.
There is a lesson in that for all of us!!
This is the rugged coastline of Cape Nelson, western Victoria. Above sits the Cape Nelson lighthouse, erected in 1884. The stretch of coast has claimed many a ship and according to the Sherpa, almost claimed me.
Apparently I was standing way to close to the edge of the cliff while trying to photograph this miserly sunset. The cloud was so heavy and the wind was howling, it wasn't easy to make this image. The Sherpa was beside himself yelling at me to move away from the edge, practically citing height safety regulations. That is the problem with getting too absorbed in what you are doing that you loose perspective. Apparently.
Wishing you all the wonder of photography adventures in this New Year, as long as they are safe ones :)
What some people will do for a photo!
Many thanks for your visits, kind comments and faves, very much appreciated.
I was hoping to try some astrophotography at the Cape Nelson Lighthouse. However, upon arrival, the sparking sky I hoped for was replaced by a thick, menacing fog, so thick at times that the lighthouse was completely hidden from view.
There was a pink glow in the sky from the setting sun so I did my best to shoot under these conditions.
Scattered clouds on a full moon lit night make the adjustment for ISO & Aperture much more difficult, so I just shot a few snaps at random and picked the best.
The lyrics of la la land came to mind
City of stars,
Are you shining just for me?
City of stars
There's so much that I can't see
Who knew?
Is this the start of something wonderful
Or one more dream
That I cannot make true...
This coastal shot was taken on Victoria's south coast near Portland just alongside the Cape Nelson lighthouse, with Cape Bridgewater in the distance. The title refers to the group of people gathered on the rocks. The movie "South Solitary" was being shot here with this wonderful coastline as the setting. I have never seen the movie - I don't think it quite made blockbuster status, but they sure knew how to pick a location. It is apparently set in 1928 on a fictional remote lighthouse island. Not a lot of activity was happening on set while I was there. Maybe just waiting for the light to be just right. We all know that feeling!
Original colour slide was taken in 2009 or 2010 with a 3D World medium format stereo film camera using Fuji Provia 100F colour slide film. Scanned with a Canon R10 with RF24-240mm lens and Nisi close up attachment.
You shone a light in my life and in the world of invertebrate conservation. My journey into this much neglected field began with you. First as my PhD supervisor, then my boss, my colleague and my friend. You helped change the public perception in Australia, and around the world of the" little things that run the world" and their importance in the landscape. The not so cute and cuddly.
Over many years we chased bugs and butterflies and stomped over the hills of Gippsland, listening for our Giant Earthworms. One of the few true gentleman and a real dag. KIng of the "dad" jokes.
I am tempted to say that a light has gone out of this world but I would be wrong. Your light still shines brightly, a legacy of all that you have achieved, the laughter you left and through all the people that loved you, of which there are so many. We will carry your light and continue on as we must and as you would have wanted.
Goodbye Alan
This lighthouse was a location for the 2010 romantic drama "South Solitary," Cape Nelson lighthouse is the picture perfect image of a harrowing white tower at the edge of the sea.

Koalas are usually sleepy at day time. This is a rare moment when I see a koala so fully awake.
It was sitting on the road and nearly got ran over by me! So when I pulled over and got out of the car, it ran and climbed up this tree, staring at me, I promptly took out my camera and snap, snap, snap.
The Cape Nelson Lighthouse was completed in 1884. The keeper manned a brass telescope to investigate suspect ships.
Cape Nelson is a peninsula of volcanic rocks overlaid by sedimentary rocks, dominantly limestone and calcarenite dune limestone. The volcanic rock platform at the base of the cliff is formed mainly of basalt (black) and scoria (purple).
Cape Nelson Lighthouse is perched about 50 m above sea-level, a lonely but welcome site to approaching ships, altering them to the rugged Bass Strait.
It was completed in 1884.
This area is known as the Ship-wreck Coast.
This is a stretch of coastline near the Cape Nelson lighthouse at Portland on Victoria's south coast. On the day I visited, there was a film crew (bottom of shot) who were mostly sitting around and admiring the view. They must have been waiting for the right conditions. The title of the shot - South Solitary - is the name of the movie they were shooting. I've not seen it yet, but I don't think it made "blockbuster" status!
This stretch of beach is adjacent to Yellow Rock and it is a well known surfing haunt.
The cliffs are limestone and quite beautiful and golden.
In the distance are more Wind Turbines which punctuate much of coastal the landscape around south-west Victoria.
The treacherous coast here necessitated a lighthouse. The Nelson lighthouse was constructed with two adjoining houses for the keepers. These constructions were erected in 1884. The lighthouse was automated in 1995. The lighthouse is 24.1 metres or 79 feet high. The complex now has a café.

Cape Nelson lighthouse is located just outside the city of Portland in south-west Victoria. Portland is the location of the first settlement in Victoria. The old lighthouse keepers cottages are now available for tourist accommodation and provide an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding coastline and country.
