Eastman 5257 from 1965. Kept in a garage with no attempts to protect. In Southern Arizona! I shot this at ISO 1.5 All development in B&W (H&W control, 14 minutes at 70 degrees F. Fixed in home made rapid fix). This is the first time I was able to get any images, but also the first time I went under ISO 12. I have 1000 odd feet I bought for 15 dollars. So there is a bit of a miracle here. Certainly more to be done. Probably over developed. Look towards Rodinal next time and shoot some wider range of speeds....

Zur Nacht leg' ich mich nun nieder
und lass' die Schäfchenwolken zieh'n
Ich denk' an Dich nur immer wieder
Und geb' mich meinen Träumen hin

On this date (22nd May) in 1968, the United States Navy lost a submarine:
The USS Scorpion (SS-589) was the third of six Skipjack-class nuclear powered fast attack submarines that were built for the United States Navy between 1956 and 1961.
The Skipjack-class design was based on the USS Albacore (AGSS-569), a unique experimental diesel-electric powered that pioneered the use of the 'teardrop' hull-shape in modern US submarines. The teardrop hull is a design for better submarine performance while submerged over surface performance. It was often used early on in submarine development, but was dropped early in the 20th century in favour of hull designs that would optimize surface performance over submerged. The Skipjacks were also the first submarines installed with the new S5W reactor. They were the fastest U.S. nuclear submarines and remained so until the USS Los Angeles entered service in 1974.
Career:
The keel for USS Scorpion SSN-589 was laid down by the 'General Dynamics Electric Boat Co' at Groton, Connecticut on August 20th 1958. She was launched on December 19th the following year, sponsored by Mrs. Elizabeth S. Morrison, the daughter of Lt. Cdr. Maximilian Gmelich Schmidt. Schmidt was commander of the previous USS Scorpion (SS-278) when that submarine was lost with all hands in 1944.
USS Scorpion (SSN-589) was commissioned July 29th 1960, with Commander Norman B. Bessac in command, and was to spend her relatively short career as part of Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 6, based at Norfolk Virginia.
On February 1st 1967, Scorpion entered Norfolk Naval Shipyard for refuelling and then for a much needed complete overhaul. Cold War pressures were pushing US submarines to their limits, and constant service had taken it's toll on the submarine. Systems had began to break down, there were frequent serious oil leaks in the machinery, and sea water seeped in from the propeller shaft seal. The submarine was experiencing serious vibration, and her operational depth was limited to 300 ft. The constant mechanical problems led the crew to nickname their boat the 'Scrapiron'.
Cold War pressures also required Scorpion to be back in service as soon as possible, and to achieve this her overhaul was much reduced, and long-overdue 'SUBSAFE' work, such as a new central valve control system, was deffered. Critically, the Emergency 'Main Ballast Tank Blow' system which had been 'unusable' was deemed to be working as-is by Charleston shipyard. Basically Scorpion underwent emergency repairs Because of the incomleted work it was decided to limit her operational depth to 500 ft. In late October 1967, Scorpion started refresher training and weapons system acceptance tests, and was given a new commanding officer 'Commander Francis Slattery'.
Loss:
On February 15th 1968, USS Scorpion (SSN-589) departed Norfolk, Virgina for a three month deployment to take part in NATO exercises with the U.S. 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean. During the deployment, the submarine suffered several mechanical malfunctions, including a chronic problem with Freon leakage from refrigeration systems. There was also an electrical fire in an escape trunk caused by a water leak shorting out a shore power connection. While the crew occasionally enjoyed liberty in Italy, Sicily, and Spain, they also worked tirelessly to keep their boat operational until their return to Norfolk at the end of May.
On May 16th, Scorpion dropped two men off at Naval Station Rota in Spain (RM2 Eric Reid for a family emergency , and ICS Joseph Underwood for health reasons) before beginning the journey home. On route Scorpion was detailed to observe Soviet naval activities in the vicinity of the Azores, where an Echo II-class submarine, and a guided missile destroyer were operating with a Soviet 'research group'.
Shortly before midnight on May 20th, Scorpion attempted to send radio communications to Naval Station Rota, but the messages were only picked up by a Navy communications station in Nea Makri, Greece, who forwarded the messages to Commander Submarine Force Atlantic (COMSUBLANT). Commander Slattery's last message reported that he was closing on the Soviet submarine and research group, running at a steady 15 kn at a depth of 110 m to begin surveillance. Nothing more was ever heard from Scorpion.
On May 27th, families eagerly waited at Pier 2, Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia where Scorpion was due in at 13.00, but the submarine failed to arrive. The submarine's failure to break radio silence by late morning was already causing concern among SUBRON-6 officials. Repeated transmissions of Scorpion’s call sign "Brandywine" went unanswered. Eventually the worried families of Scorpion's crew had to go home not knowing what had happened to their loved ones. The subsequent search for the missing submarine was fruitless, and on June 5th, the U.S.Navy declared that Scorpion and her crew was "presumed lost".
Weck:
The wreck of USS Scorpion was found in late October 1968 by the Navy's oceanographic research ship 'Mizar', approximately 400 nmi SW of the Azores, at a depth of more than 9,800 ft. This was after the area of search was narrowed down, following the release of recordings of the submarine's destruction picked up by underwater hydrophones.
Other vessels were dispatched to the scene to collect photographs and other data, including the bathyscaphe Trieste II. Analysis of the sound recordings, and the photographs of the wreckage leave no doubt that Scorpion's destruction was caused by the submarine imploding under massive pressure as she passed her crush depth, but the cause of her sinking still remains a mystery.

Rest in eternal peace.
Kodak 2238 shot at ISO 100 and developed in H&W Control 1:15. Underexposed and overdeveloped this is the first experiment. H&W Control was invented by Harold Holden and Arnold Weichert and “perfected” to work with Agfa Copex Pan Rapid microfilm which was rebranded by H&W as a house film to work with Control developer. The purpose of the creation was to use the high contrast film for aerial reconnaissance who H&W contracted with. Here I’m trying to see how high we could reasonable run 2238 as a standard film for snapshots etc.
H&W Control’s patent states it’s normal initial use should be 1:15 dilution at 68 degrees F for 12 minutes and then expand from there. This roll was shot at ISO 100 then split. I developed the first half of the roll at 68 degrees for 13 Minutes and the second half for 14 minutes. Standard agitation is constant for the first 2 minutes and then 6 seconds every minute thereafter. Stop/washed in tap water at 68 degrees and fixed in Ilford Hypam 1:4 for 3 minutes (H&W suggests 2 minutes).
These were shot on the same 2 days, overcast with little direct sunlight. The shots are obviously underexposed. But some of them are pretty adequate with some post process. There is a tendency for the picture to go dark and appear as evening or even well lit night. However it is easy to brighten the scene.
After some thought I think the goal will be to get clear ISO 80 pictures on 2238. I will next extend the developing time in order to clear up some of the blocked parts. I may try some sodium thiocyanate something around 1 g/Liter of stock so 0.06 gram in the working solution.

OOAK Monster High Custom Repaint Art Doll - American Horror Story Coven Voodoo Doll - SOLD
The suspense is killing me. I just had to make another tribute doll. So here is the voodoo doll from the teaser. She is made from a Monster High Catty Noir Doll. Her ears have been removed to create a beautiful voodoo doll. Real black enamel and brass entomology pins have been drilled through and glued to pierce her skin just like the teaser. The base was made by hand in wood by JK Weichert. Her factory paint has been removed and hair flocked.
The Voodoo doll is meant to be a collectors doll, to look at and not play with, although all care has been taken to allow gentle play such as changing costumes and posing doll. No stand is included with this doll. This is a one of a kind artist doll created to the artist's whim and specifications. The doll itself was created by mattel. Not intended for children the pins are very sharp.
Dolls are signed by the artist and come with certificate of authenticity.

Russian-born ballet dancer and actress Genia Nikolaieva (1904-2001) worked in the German cinema during the 1930s. In 1938 she emigrated to the United States, where she became ‘one of the most beautiful studio secretaries for Warner Bros'.
Genia Nikolaieva was born in St Petersburg, Russia in 1904. Her name is also written as Genia Nikolajeva, Eugenia Nikolajewa or Genia Nikolaiewa. Her parents moved to Berlin where she took ballet lessons. In 1920 she had her first professional dance performance. She continued her dance career at the Stadttheater Königsberg and she danced in the ensemble of Ernst Matráy, and with his company, she gave guest performances in England and South America. She became one of the soloists at the Deutschen Staatsoper ballet (German State Opera Ballet) in Berlin. In 1930 she and five other soloists were dismissed by the director of ballet, the innovative choreographer and dance theoretic Rudolf von Laban because they belonged to the ‘ballet camp’ and not to his ‘modern dance’ camp. The dismissed dancers, the ’State Opera Six’, generated much publicity in the press. They successfully appeared at dance evenings and variety shows with their popular and well-established repertoire. Nikolaieva also started a film career. Her film debut was in Zwei Krawatten/Two Neckties (Felix Basch, Richard Weichert, 1930) starring Olga Tschechova. She appeared in the slapstick comedy Schuetzenfest in Schilda/Festival of Riflemen in Schilda (Adolf Trotz, 1931) starring Siegfried Arno (aka Sig Arno). She played in another comedy Ein Toller Einfall/A Mad Idea (Kurt Gerron, 1932) which featured comic actor Max Adelbert and Willy Fritsch. She also had small parts in the crime drama Schuss im Morgengrauen/A Shot at Dawn (Alfred Zeisler, 1932) with Ery Bos, and the stylish farce Quick (Robert Siodmak, 1932) with Hans Albers and Lilian Harvey. In Das häßliche Mädchen/The ugly girl (Hermann Kosterlitz a.k.a. Henry Koster, 1933) she appeared with Dolly Haas and Max Hansen. It was the last film that Henry Koster directed in Berlin before having to leave due to Nazis. He left Berlin, having knocked out an SS officer, one day before filming was finished on the film. The Nazis removed his name from the credits and substituted the name of Hasse Preiss, the lyricist.
From 1933 on, Genia Nikolaieva found it difficult to continue working under the new Nazi regime because of the now asked Aryan certificate. Propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels spoke up for her and pinned the half-Jewess officially as ‘northern’. She played the female lead in 90 Minuten Aufenthalt/90 Minutes Stop (Harry Piel, 1934) starring Harry Piel, but mostly she played supporting parts such as in the comedies Das Einmaleins der Liebe/Love's Arithmetic (Carl Hoffmann) with Luise Ullrich, and Ein Ganzer Kerl/A Regular Fellow (Carl Boese, 1936) with Hermann Speelmans and Lien Deyers. She also appeared with the Swedish comedy team of Fy og Bi aka Pat & Patachon in the goofy comedy Blinde Passagiere/Stowaways (Fred Sauer, 1937). Her final European films were Meine Frau, die Perle/My Wife – the Pearl (Alwin Elling, 1937) with Ralph Arthur Roberts, and Unentschuldigte Stunde/The Unexcused Hour (E.W. Emo, 1937) with Hans Moser. In 1938 she emigrated to the United States. In Hollywood she only appeared in small parts in three films: Ride a Crooked Mile (Alfred E. Green, 1938), Adventure in Diamonds (George Fitzmaurice, 1940) with Isa Miranda, and The Lady Has Plans (Sidney Lanfield, 1942). IMDb writes that she then became ‘one of the most beautiful studio secretaries for Warner Bros’. Genia Nikolaieva died in 2001 in Los Angeles, US. She was 97.

This building at 6 West Route 70 in Marlton NJ was originally on Maple Avenue and moved to this site in 1976.
It was built in 1876 as the Marlton Grange hall, and was also used at different times as the Post Office and Town Hall. It later became Marlton General Hardware store, which moved across Maple Avenue in the mid 1970s and vacated this building. It was after this the building was moved here and became Old Marlton Inn, which closed in the mid 1980s. In 1987, it became a Weichert Realty office. Weichert closed here around 2015 and the building has fallen into disrepair with a gaping hole in the roof (some of the damage is visible in this photo at the right corner) that has been covered with a tarp. Figuring with no repairs being made to the building and the property listed as a redevelopment opportunity, sadly it will probably be demolished when the property is sold.
UPDATE: This building was demolished in February 2020.
