Driving along Hwy. 101 in Washington state is always so beautiful even if it's a stormy day, there is still a view of the Pacific Ocean and dramatic clouds.

I just had to post another iPhone photo sent to me by my friend who has bravely adopted a puppy and a kitten at the same time. (Lots of hijinks at his house! )I had a lot of fun painting it by using Deep Dream Generator, then Topaz Studio. I hope that you like it, Flickr friends!

(Yes, the puppy shown in the photo is the same one whose mother was rescued from being shot in Mexico.)

Skippy and his stuffed tiger cross the log bridge…

As many of you know, I'm a big fan of the classic comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes. I wanted to create a playful tribute that references their legendary log bridge crossing.

Keep imagining.

Keep blazing trails.

And keep shining bright, my friends!

Skippy and his stuffed tiger blaze trails…

Winter holidays always remind me of sitting by the warm fire and excitedly reading and rereading the adventures of two of my favorite characters, Calvin and Hobbes! I wanted to create a playful tribute that harkens back to their last comic strip together, a snowy journey into the heart of the imagination.

Keep imagining. Keep soaring.

Keep shining bright, everyone!

The American robin is a migratory songbird of the true thrush genus and Turdidae, the wider thrush family. It is named after the European robin because of its reddish-orange breast, though the two species are not closely related, with the European robin belonging to the Old World flycatcher family. The American robin is widely distributed throughout North America, wintering from southern Canada to central Mexico and along the Pacific Coast. It is the state bird of Connecticut, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

The American robin has a place in Native American mythology. The story of how the robin got its red breast by fanning the dying flames of a campfire to save a Native American man and a boy is similar to those that surround the European robin. The Tlingit people of northwestern North America held it to be a culture hero created by Raven to please the people with its song. One of the houses of the Raven Tribe from the Nisga'a Nation holds the robin as a house crest.

The Peace Bridge robins were a family of American robins that attracted minor publicity in the mid-1930s for their prominent nest on the Canadian side of the Peace Bridge connecting Buffalo, New York, to Fort Erie, Ontario.

The American robin is considered a symbol of spring. A well-known example is a poem by Emily Dickinson titled "I Dreaded That First Robin So". Among other 19th-century poems about the first robin of spring is "The First Robin" by Dr. William H. Drummond, which according to the author's wife is based on a Quebec superstition that whoever sees the first robin of spring will have good luck. The association has continued down to the present day, as, for example, in one Calvin and Hobbes cartoon from 1990 that had Calvin celebrating his inevitable wealth and fame after seeing the first robin of spring. The harbinger of spring sobriquet is borne out by the fact that American robins tend to follow the 37 °F (3 °C) isotherm north in spring, but also south in fall.

American popular songs featuring this bird include "When the Red, Red Robin (Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along)", written by Harry M. Woods and a hit for Al Jolson and others, and "Rockin' Robin", written by Roger Thomas and a hit for Bobby Day and others. "Fly, Robin, Fly" by the German disco group Silver Convention was a popular hit in the 1970s.

Although the comic book superhero Robin was inspired by an N. C. Wyeth illustration of Robin Hood, a later version had his mother nicknaming him Robin because he was born on the first day of spring. His red shirt suggests the bird's red breast.

The above caption and image is from Bill Watterson's famous comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes"...

I have used a magnifying lens to focus the light .. I was hoping (and tried) to get a spectrum but alas .. as the caption says .. my strategy tragically backfired ...but I tried hard :-) though I did manage to get a little orange halo...

Dawn at Mount Tuli | Dämmerung am Tuli

For Macro Monday's "Made of Metal"

A beautiful morning under a bright sun is dawning at Mount Tuli. Due to a constant inflow of fresh magma, Mount Tuli is one of the very few volcanos on earth with a persistent lava lake. Mt. Tuli is one of the most active volcanos on earth as well, yet is the most gentle of them (unlike Mt. Calvin in Hobbes country which is known for its violent eruptions).

Tuli is Finnish for fire. I named this little volcano "Tuli", because what you see is a detail of a hand-forged wrought-iron bracelet I bought at a Christmas market, many years ago, when I visited a dear friend in Helsinki, Finland. The bracelet is almost like a cuff and rather martial (there was a more slender version about half as wide as the one I bought, but my size was sold out) which is why it is more of an "objet d'art, something I prefer to look at (you can do so, too, you'll find a capture of it in the first comment).

Set-up: I placed the bracelet on top of a lid (brushed metal, slightly reflective) of a broken WMF spice mill which was placed on top of a porcelain box (happened to yield the right height), and placed it in front of my endless light tealight holder.

Lightsources: one tealight (multiplied by the endless light tealight holder); and a much improvised first attempt at indirect/reflected light for which I used an Ikea Jansjö clamp-on LED lamp and a pink candle, both placed to the right of the bracelet, and tealight holder; and aluminium foil (on the left) as a reflector.

The crater: one of the bracelet's holes (0,8 cm / 0,314961 inches in diameter). The lava lake: a reflection of the tealight (which served as the bright morning sun, too). The brushed metal of the spice mill lid which I placed the bracelet on nicely reflected the light from the tealight through the bracelets decorative hole. I wanted to do a focus stack first for more sharpness, but in order to get the lava lake reflection, I had to raise my table top tripod quite considerably which made it rather wobbly and unsteady.

Thank you for your kind comments, I appreciate every single one, and your faves! Vielen Dank für Eure tollen Kommentare und Faves!

A Happy Macro Monday everyone!

For this shot I literally turned by tripod about 45 degress from my last one of the Bigelow Grille. This is the BNY Mellon building, which isn't all that big of a Pittsburgh landmark, however it does look great at the "blue hour" in HDR!

Thanks for stopping by my friends, and enjoy your weeks!

I don't mind invitations, but please no big, shiny, flashing, glitter graphics, they will be deleted. Also, please contact me if you would like to use my pictures for any reason. Thanks!

Spaceman Spiff and the Great Time Fraud

Imagine you were a space traveller like Spaceman Spiff, and you finally found an alien civilization that has mastered time travel. These aliens can effortlessly travel to and fro in time without experiencing weird side effects, time paradoxes, or imposing dangerous changes to various timelines. And on top of that they are not only welcoming, but happily offer you to replace your old, (t)rusty spaceship (a bit battered from your space adventures, and you are also running out of spare parts) with one of their time-travelling ships. Would you say "No!" to this offer? Not if you are Spaceman Spiff whose alter ego Calvin deems himself to be the actual genius inventor of time travel ("Who are these aliens anyway, right, Hobbes? Hobbes?! Stop that eye-rolling! Hobbes?!?"). Spiff didn't even mind the fact that said time-travelling ship wasn't of the latest generation (let alone the previous generation or the generation before...). And so it happened that after a few lightyears away from planet time travel, on their way to new adventures through time and space, Hobbes (Calvin aka Spiff was too much occupied with bathing in the glory of having wangled this gem of a ship off these slightly dumb aliens) all of a sudden noticed that something was wrong with the mission timer. Its time didn't match the time his trusty (and thanks to multi-band 6 always accurate) G-Shock GW-M5610U-1 displayed. Could it be possible that the time-travelling ship's mission timer gained time? Oh dear, he should tell Calvi...Spiff! They had to find a way to replace the faulty mission-timer or they'd never make it back to their own timeline!

Well. Did Spiff and his long-suffering "No 1" Hobbes find a way back to the year 1997 to find a brand new Swatch Scuba Irony 200 "Hydrospace"? I'm afraid I don't know but actually, I'm quite confident because my very own Scuba Hydrospace (the only Swatch I have kept) that I have recently woken up from a long slumber with a new battery does not only still work after all these years, but it's still pretty accurate as well. Transferred to Spaceman Spiff's unfortunate situation this probably means that he and his loyal companion Hobbes will eventually travel back to their own timeline and maybe even back to the exact day they left Earth – provided Spiff aka Calvin lets Hobbes steer the course for once ;)

So I hope there is enough glass (the Scuba's domed crystal) in the image to suit the theme. The final image is made from 15 focus-stacking images combined in Helicon Focus.

This picture is for the group Happy Caturday and this week the theme is "Eyes of March".

Noah decided that he wanted to show his tongue along with his eyes for the theme.

I sat at my desk making raspberry noises trying to figure out how to spell the sound... and then I started laughing just thinking about what I was doing!! I opted to go with a spelling I saw on a Calvin & Hobbes cartoon (one of my favorites).

I want to know the truth... who is sitting there blowing raspberries and trying to figure out how to spell it!!?? Let me know what you come up. :)))

If you are both a Star Wars and a Calvin & Hobbes fan like me, you should definitely have a look at Brian Kesinger's great works (www.instagram.com/briankesinger/). It was love at first sight for me!

So I decided to recreate one of my favorite cartoons with LEGO. This is the result. Hope you like it, but all credit goes to its author... it's absolutely briliant, imho!

Could be the start of a new series... "The adventures of little Kylo", but first, I have to finish what I started!! ;-)

Happy Star Wars Day everyone!

Tenth build in my Iron Builder round against Eann just 1 red cauldron again.

(Day four... five? I can't remember any more--of vignweek too, because what better mystery than an uncharted adventure?)

Can't believe it took me this long in the round to realize that the pot made a good shirt for Calvin, because I've been wanting to try my hand at this scene for a while. It goes without saying that I was inspired by Simon's classic, and also by some of the Calvin & Hobbes stuff I've built for the Simon games.

I know it's a total Flicker cliche, but I like it, so here it is.

It's a magical world, Hobbes Ol' buddy .... let's go exploring!

... WIth toboggan, treasure map, and explorer flag ... they're off to adventures!

---

I've built C&H many times, it's one of the few things that I build that brings me such wonderful joy yet anxiety at building such beloved characters. Unlike Sci-Fi where I can't get anything wrong (it's my world dammit!), C&H holds a special place not just my, but many people's hearts.

But when #RogueBrick's 101 theme this week was 'Adventure' ...well there's only one duo I'd give anything to go exploring with.

Up to round 6 in the RogueOlympics now and our build prompt was “Impulse”. I decided to base my entry on the ever impulsive Calvin as one of his alter-egos Spaceman Spiff from the comics Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson. The scene uses exactly 101 parts and Spiff does fit in his spaceship.

Potomac River, Great Falls, Maryland

it really is better in "L" :-)

although long exposure would create the classic silky impression of the falls, i think it would diminish the power demonstrated here. that, and the fact that i have no idea how to do long exposure images:-)

Built for @tipsandbricks What I love about nature contest ... exploring the wilderness with your best friend - nature is your backyard for adventure!

yeah... I did it again... I built another Calvin and Hobbes build ... There's always something so special about them and so elegantly encapsulates the childhood wonder and joy of exploring nature.

This was definitely a fun challenge as I tried to match some of Waterson's watercolours palette.

I think I definitely need to revisit this with larger foot print... and better bricks instead of using cheese for entire back section :D

Calvin Question. "How come old photographs are always black and white? Didn’t they have color film back then?

Dad A. Sure they did. In fact, those old photographs are in color. It’s just that the world was black and white then. The world didn’t turn color until sometime in the 1930s, and it was pretty grainy color for a while, too.

Q. But then why are old paintings in color?! If the world was black and white, wouldn’t artists have painted it that way?

A. Not necessarily. A lot of great artists were insane.

Q. But… But how could they have painted in color anyway? Wouldn’t their paints have been shades of gray back then?

A. Of course, but they turned colors like everything else did in the ’30s.

Q. So why didn’t old black and white photos turn color too?

A. Because they were color pictures of black and white, remember?"

HBWe!! And I am back from vacation!! We enjoyed a lazy vacation doing nothing at all!! I hardly had phone service, not much internet, nothing to do... it was so relaxing! Now if only I was on the beach! Still it was nice to get away!

A couple months back, Simon and myself decided we wanted to do some sort of collaboration for BrickCon, even though I wasn't able to attend.

What you see here is the result. Fond memories of reading Calvin and Hobbes growing up for both of us made it an easy choice for what to do!

Hope you guys enjoy!
