The White-vented Plumeleteer is a large, solid hummingbird of forest and clearings in Panama, Colombia, northwestern Venezuela, and southwestern Ecuador.

This species occurs in a forest, edge habitats, clearings, and scrub in both dry and humid situations. It feeds on the nectar from a variety of flowers and is particularly inclined to flycatch for aerial insects or even glean insects from foliage.

A fable

The Guarani say that one day there was a huge fire in the jungle. All the animals fled in terror, for it was a terrible fire.

Suddenly, the jaguar saw the hummingbird pass over his head ... in the opposite direction, that is, towards the fire.

It surprised him greatly, but he did not want to stop. Instantly, she saw it pass again, this time in the same direction. He was able to observe this coming and going repeatedly, until he decided to ask the bird, because it seemed a very bizarre behavior:

What are you doing hummingbird? He asked. I am going to the lake -the bird answered- I take water with my beak and I throw it on the fire to put out the fire. The jaguar smiled.

Are you crazy? - he said. Do you think you will be able to turn it off with your little beak by yourself?

Well- he replied, the hummingbird- I do my part… And after saying this, he went to the lake for more water.

When great Carolus Linnaeus described Doris Longwing in 1771 he refers to the painting engraved by François-Nicolas Martinet (1731-1790) in the magnificent Planches enluminées d'histoire naturelle edited by Edmé-Louis Daubenton (1730-1785) from 1765 onwards on the commission of that great French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788). The book has more than a thousand plates of which 973 are of birds; the others picture insects and corals. Regrettably that volume does not specify who (of some 70 or more painters!) actually saw Doris whether mounted in Europe or alive in South America. And Daubenton does not give a Latin classificatory name - Linnaeus a bit later called it Papilio doris - but merely refers to it colorfully as 'Le Parasol de Surinam'.

The red-billed blue magpie was described by the French polymath Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon in 1775 in his Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux. The bird was also illustrated in a hand-coloured plate engraved by François-Nicolas Martinet in the Planches Enluminées D'Histoire Naturelle which was produced under the supervision of Edme-Louis Daubenton to accompany Buffon's text. Neither the plate caption nor Buffon's description included a scientific name but in 1783 the Dutch naturalist Pieter Boddaert coined the binomial name Corvus erythrorynchus in his catalogue of the Planches Enluminées. The specimen described by Buffon had come from China but the type location was restricted to Canton by Hugh Birckhead in 1937. The red-billed blue magpie is now one of five species placed in the genus Urocissa that was introduced by the German ornithologist Jean Cabanis in 1850. The name of the genus combines the Ancient Greek oura meaning "tail" and kissa meaning "magpie". The specific epithet erythroryncha combines the Ancient Greek eruthros meaning "red" and rhunkhos meaning "bill".

White-vented Plumeleteer is a hummingbird species with a distribution mainly in northwestern South America, plus into Panama in Central America. The second part of the scientific name honours Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, a French naturalist of the 1700s. This individual was seen near the town of Minca in northern Colombia.
