song of the day

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

My rules for this 365 day project:

1) always copy this caption as a reminder

2) only use photos taken that day

3) add these just to the 365 project group

4) I will delete all comments that have group invitations / unnecessary icons in them

5) I should learn something new every day

6) no re-takes of photographs from a previous day

7) each photo is meant to say something about me

8) pick a song for the day to go along with the mood of the picture

This is from a Flickr Group trip to the state penitentiary in Santa Fe. Had fun photographing the models and playing with the strobes. Thanks all for the fun times, it was a blast.

The doyen of Indian freight diesels, WDG3A #14501, at Guwahati on Friday 4th December 2009.

We'd gone out to Rangiya with the intention of covering the Metre Gauge Murkeongselek line for the last time, as gauge conversion was imminently scheduled, but when this beast rolled in on train 701, the 04:50 New Bongaigaon - Guwahati we were straight back after only 5 minutes - it had to be done!

A good engine with a nicely whistling Napier turbocharger, although the driver was a gnome who would only go to notch 7 - still sounded lovely though.

One of Malda Town's few WDG3As, #14761, runs light through Guwahati on Friday 4th December 2009. Beautifully turned out, as ever, by MLDT.

Anyone who has ever bought more than one thing by mail order must have experienced that feeling of deflation when a really big box turns up and it has something really tiny within it.

I've bought, through home and work, a lot of stuff from CPC, the electronics supplier. They're particularly bad offenders, but I think this one might have even them beaten!

Since I moved in here almost ten years ago my old man has berated me for the amount of heat being lost through the door on the top landing being left open. For nearly ten years I've been fobbing him off telling him that I'll get round to buying a door closer, and I finally decided to damn well do it.

There's some on the B&Q website, so I went to my local shop. They sucked their teeth and said I'd need a warehouse. I went to the warehouse. They sucked their teeth, checked their computer and said that they were not in stock and would never be restocked but that if I wanted to spend sixty quid instead of eight they had an alternative.

Instead I opted to go for screwfix, and I decided to hang the expense and go for mail order. This is what turned up. The brown box is the shipping carton. The two white ones are the contents.

Out came the tape measure and the spreadsheet. The brown box has a volume of 25.8 litres. The white box, a volume of 325.6cc. I could have fitted EIGHTY of the white boxes in the brown box, and instead I got two. That's a 2.5% volume occupancy rate. That's three teaspoonfuls in a pint glass.

What's weird is why on earth this would be the case. Now, I accept that Screwfix probably don't recruit their warehousing staff exclusively from MIT, but they are not going to be stupid people, and even a stupid person could see that this box was way too big. That must mean that there is a reason, a rule or a procedure that means these items were allocated to this box.

I'm damned if I can think what it would be. Answers on a postcard please.

There were loads of WDG3As knocking about Guwahati the couple of days we were in the area and we managed four of them on passenger work, but 14756 wasn't one of them!

Here it stands adjacent to the carriage roads at Guwahati on Friday 4th Decemeber 2009. Note the Rhino shed symbol of NGC.

One of those from the group photograph and one I had great hopes for due to so much color on the outside showing, when I found it near The Mines Road and the Toll Road, north of Laredo, Texas on Easter Sunday. (going to Minnesota!)
