Flickrs in Support of Social Causes.
Flickr unites an incredible amount of people from all over the world, from many different social backgrounds and realities. This is reflected in the fabulous collections of images, which unfortunately, due to the sheer immensity of the Flickr archives, we commoners never seem to manage to get to the bottom of it all. I suppose that’s part of the enjoyment of being a Flickr and something which keeps most Flickrs constantly roaming from page to page at all hours of the day and night, from all four corners of the world, each one discovering some new favorite or making new contacts.
It was this that brought me to understand what an incredibly valuable resource Flickr could be for organizations such as mine, The Children At Risk Foundation ( www.carfweb.net ), involved in the social arena. Flickr has many really talented photographers, both amateur and professional, with seemingly very little to differenciate them, each respecting one another’s peculiarities, expressions or even limitations in this Flicktorial world without frontiers.
As a result of my own travels around Flickr’s galleries, I have discovered many wonderful people with open minds and equally open hearts, willing to help us in our plight to help street children and other children at risk in Brazil
( www.flickr.com/people/beija-flor/ ).
One such person is Subhasish Karmaker
( www.flickr.com/photos/chasingthedreams/ ) from Hyderabad in India.
Apart from his wonderful photographs, Subhasish also makes incredibly beautiful collages like “Its My Life” ( www.flickr.com/photos/chasingthedreams/2878987/ ) or “Inspire” ( www.flickr.com/photos/chasingthedreams/2878983/ ). It was the sight of these collages on Flickr that brought him to my attention.
In Brazil, the youth involved in our programme, developing ideas for a new Social Communication Project, found that Subhasish’ collages could be made to work in support of their ideas. So, Subhasish was contacted and he immediately responded in a positive way, resulting in some wonderful collages for this project called Urban Outcries or Gritos Urbanos in Portuguese ( www.carfweb.net/gritos ).
But to amplify this positive social interaction we also contacted other photographers on Flickr asking their kind permission to use images for these collages. One such photographer was Brazilain Tatiana Cardeal
( www.flickr.com/photos/tatianacardeal/ ), who’s images reflect much of the essence of Brazilian society, helping to transmit a clearer picture of what it was we were in search of for Urban Outcries first programme event called “LIVES – The Faces and Forces of a People” or “VIDAS – As Faces e Forças de um Povo” in Portuguese ( www.gritosurbanos.blogspot.com ). The fountain of creative resources represented in the many of Flickr’s galleries certainly helps “connect” our differences and has also resulted in these wonderful collages which I have just uploaded to our gallery.
The collages are being used to market this innovative youth project and hopefully we will soon have them appearing on t-shirts sold to help support it.
With such great results, it won’t be long before we contact other Flickrs asking for their images to produce new and exciting collages to illustrate the many topics to be covered by this equally exciting social development project. Next in line is the controversial topic of Firearms (and their consequences in our society). Brazil is deeply affected by all the violence generated by an uncontrollable use of small firearms in this country. I’m sure there are plenty of suitable images on Flickr to help inspire Subhasish Karmaker with future collages
( www.flickr.com/photos/chasingthedreams/ ).
Our sincere thanks go to all you socially minded Flickrs and especially Subhasish and Tatiana for their participation in this very special project of which this first topic will be presented to the public during a three hour long interactive cultural event on March 16th 2005 at the Hummingbird Activity Centre in São Paulo
