In our city there are many places where industries like the tanning of leather left poisonous chemicals in the soil. But it is safe to grow vegetables in raised beds, as you see in this photo. There is a barrier at the bottom of the beds to keep the roots of the plants from getting into the poisonous soil. The soil in raised beds is well drained and is kept fertile by frequent additions of compost.
