[Closed] [Official topic] Feedback on today’s site changes

Flickr Staff

Thea Lamkin says:

Just in case you're wondering where the Official Feedback thread is now, follow along to the new one we created here.

Egads! Such a lot of new stuff came out today, and we're sure you're itching to tell us what you think about it.

This is just the place for all of your questions, concerns, suggestions, and other non-bug related comments about:

- The new Home page
- The new Photostream page
- The new Photo page
- The new Set page
- The new Search
- Other design changes you may have noticed

Let's keep all the feedback in one place and let everyone have a chance to be heard. Kay, Emily and I will be reading everything you have to say, and responding when we have the time and information to do so.

Thanks everyone, and Flickr on!

Staff Update

Hello again everyone. We've made some big, giant changes to the site, and it will take some getting used to. We are listening, and value what you all have to say.

We are also committed to making sure the new pages are working properly, and will continue to make improvements as we hear more from you. Please do your part to make sure that people coming to the Forum for help or to report bugs and site issues get a chance to be heard.

For those of you who have reported bugs or other usability concerns already, we'll be working over the following days to take stock of ongoing issues and respond when possible.

Finally, it should also go without saying that personal attacks against Staff or other users will not be tolerated, and may prevent your ability to take part in discussion here in the Help Forum.

Staff Update

Hey everyone. We're still reading this thread regularly, as well as all the other feedback threads you've been contributing to in the forum.

Though we appreciate your need to participate in discussions around our new changes, it's time to let the Help Forum return to its normal operations. People come here for help using Flickr, and we need to give them the room to get their questions answered by fellow users and Staff.

To make this is possible, we'll be closing threads that do not relate to Flickr and redirecting general feedback threads here.

While most of us will get used to the new format with a few tweeks from Flickr, the most urgent problem to address is that of the photostreams not loading and being faced with the rotating balls. It works fine on my laptop at home, but on my work computer (64 bit machine running Windows 7) it won't. I can see my photostream in edit, but if I want to look at contacts' images, I cant see their photostream at all. I can see their sets, but can't open them. This may be due to some limitations our IT Nazis put on my web settings, but it seems to be common to a lot of users and unless Flickr addresses this or explains to us what is possibly wrong with our settings, people will walk away. This will be a shame, because the Flickr community has been a joy to be involved with.

I got this email from Yahoo after I asked them to get rid of this horrible new look:

Thank you for contacting Yahoo! Flickr.

I apologize for any difficulties you are experiencing with the new Flickr layout.

Once you have been upgraded to the new Flickr, it is no longer possible to switch to an earlier version. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

The older version of Flickr is being phased out, so all of our customers must be upgraded.

We know it’s an adjustment to get started in a new interface, but we think it’s well worth it.

You'll see that the new Flickr is fast, easy to use, and available anywhere.

Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Flickr.

Regards,

Derrick

Giving 1TB free is fantastic, but making it so slow and clunky to access what you up load makes that gift kind of pointless!
And I mean it really is slow, plus it keeps timing out on the HTTP connection (so I'm guessing the Flickr infrastructure is struggling too).
Plus on top of that it's just poor design, it fact it just seems there bolted bits on to the old pages here and there without any real design thought. The old pages were clear and functional, these are not, functionality is lost in what looks like something an ad agency would create (style over function). There's a good reason why the clever guys at Google don't try and sex up their plain search engine page, because it just gives users what they want.
What are you playing at Yahoo? First you send $1.1 billion on Tumblr, now this! Crazy!

tim lowly says:

The fix for this fiasco seems pretty simple:

Flickr has for a long time had the user option of "customizing" their front page, choosing one of three options. All you (that would be you almighty Flickr controllers) need to do is add a fourth, default option which would be the new endless mash option. While I would prefer to have subsequent pages as they were before, I would be willing to have the new look show up beyond the front page. In line with this, even if someone chooses the old design (which I much prefer) you might give the visitor an option under "search" that would do what the new layout does. It is convenient for searching. Not for much else though.

My suspicion is that there is something about this new layout that Flickr regards as more conducive to advertising, but they are holding back on that until this wave of backlash fades. In regards to the latter: that might be wishful thinking.

Part of the irony (well maybe not so ironic if you folks are really trying to commit Flickrcide) of the simultaneity of the Tumblr acquisition with this "new look" is that with Tumblr one actually has considerable flexibility with designing the look of one's page.

What a shame that something that everyone was happy with was changed (sorry, destroyed) without any warning. A choice would have been nice, my photostream (when it does load) now looks dreadful, I liked having the the photos separated on the page with the sets/collections down the side - why can't we still have this as an option????????? Whatever happened to customer service?????? It certainly has been a very undemocratic way of bringing about changes - I loved flickr they way it was, it was easy to use and my friends and family could look at my photos with ease, but this new photostream page is just not user friendly at all. I fear that our protests and requests for a 'classic view' option (which would be the simplest solution) will be ignored and our only 'option' will be to abandon flickr altogether - a great shame, very sad.

Thea Lamkin</This is the point folks, if i wanted just a place to play around with my cell with 20 or some images i use Tumbler or Jux, but when you have years invested in images as you grow as a photographer you can not use a format like this where 1000 or more images are cramp in top of each other and all the comments are such are lost in another page, the whole purpose of having a flicker account is lost....was a small gallery, clean slate to try your new ideas or work and see how was received, you could concentrate in one image at a time and see what you would need to work on as you could to get inspired by others work.......yes a small gallery or sorts for more serious photographers and aficionados as well, i was not informed of this changes coming when they charge my credit card with another term of a pro account, not even a email to tell us what will happened with our work....i feel sad.....is lots of playgrounds out there to play with your pictures but was only one Flickr.....now is gone.....backing up my images, i dont need another Tumbler or Jux..

Shittr.
My only concern is that the community which I am a part of will be damaged as its members scatter across multiple replacement sites now, because for many staying is no longer an option- simply because if the new photostreams fail to load for them, there's no point in sticking around. Not that there's anything much to look at- it's super unpleasant to browse pictures now with all the clutter and visual overload. The community tools- comments, favourites, profiles etc- are pushed off into distant corners, hidden by default or just plain nowhere to be found. Flickr clones are now a better option than flickr itself.

Marissa Mayer is to Yahoo what Ron Johnson was to J.C. Penny. It took a while, but Flickr has finally been destroyed -- as everyone predicted would happen when Yahoo bought it.

I switched from Smugmug to Flickr Pro several years ago and was happy that I did...until today. I'm shocked by the piece of crap that you have created. Obviously, the purpose of Flickr has changed.

Rather than catering to adults truly interested in photography who were willing to pay for an account, your new goal appears to be creating a website catering to teenagers and college students who are happy to have ads plastered all over a photo (no doubt, sent in from a cellphone) of someone throwing up on their shoes after drinking too much. Good luck with that.

Count me out on renewing my pro account. Count me out on spending any time on Flicker at all.

The beauty of a competitive market is that incompetent firms go broke and so are driven out of the marketplace. The beauty of the internet is that the destruction of the incompetent usually happens at warp speed! Like a bad house guest, Yahoo has long overstayed its welcome on the internet. Marissa Mayer is the perfect candidate to destroy Yahoo once and for all. For that, I am thankful. She can take both Flickr and Tumblr with her. Call it a twofer.

First, I don't like the new layouts. Not sure who your test group was but they live in a strange box! Second, I'm relatively new to flickr but it just irks me that I just paid my $25 and now you want to double it for less features (in my opinion). What the heck do you think you will gain by giving away more free space. As is typical here in the great USA, the few subsidize the many! So lets double the price for those loyal users and give away more to the tightwads. Oh... and threaten us to pay more or else you get obnoxious adds all over our pages.
I came to Flickr because I'm an aspiring photographer at heart. I wanted a space to show my work, recieve feedback and learn from top notch photographers. You've all but screwed that by 1.) taking away the "Pro" designation for those serious people and 2.) giving away so much free space to be cluttered up with endless terabites of iPhone/smartphone crap photos. I think this is a very bad move and personally, I wish I had the programming skills because I would create a more friendly site that catered to the serious amature/pro photographer, not the blubbering teenager uploading photos of their stoned a$$!

Just my humble opinion...

I’ve decided to update this to be more constructive; my admittedly knee jerk reaction as it wasn’t helpful really.

I don’t like the new design –having everything squashed together like Pinterest makes for a disruptive, disjointed and ultimately jarring experience. It devalues the photography in some ways reducing it down to just a load of thumbnails your scroll through endlessly. I get that a lot of other sites like 500px have got successful using a similar format so I guess there must be a market for it.

I would rather not have any terabytes than this design but I understand why you did it, you want the Instagram audience. You want mass market to sell more advertising, hedging your bets that you will make more from add revenue than you did from the people who went pro –I feel sorry for them. I get it, it worked for Facebook.
However please enable greater customisation, like choosing the background colour for light box, I view images on neutral grey for example and more view options in the justified views –you have nice options in the groups for example but not on the “contacts page” or the “you” page. More option in general couldn’t hurt, like re-sizing or changing these large black chunky menus, again colour and possibly size.

I’ll stick around for a bit, to see if things improve but I am further developing my other options (www.indexhibit.org/ and Tumblr) anticipating that things will stay the same. While pages load slowly, the CSS doesn’t seem to be broken any more –so I know you guys (Flickr) are trying.

Very disappointed in the site change -- as far as desktop/laptop use the layout was fantastic before, everything worked smoothly, things were fast, etc. I am not at all impressed with the new layout/look/feel of Flickr -- The homepage when you log in is crowded and confusing and just not smooth.

Since the upgrade, I have not had a single successful upload either and everything is slow as molasses in January. Would be perfectly happy if a "system restore" was completed back to this weekend. To top it all off to offer a free terrabyte to all free customers and offer the pro customers really nothing (advanced stats is a joke really, not why I was using it) is somewhat a slap in the face to your loyal customers. Will look into other photo sharing sites, but unfortunately there was nothing in my opinion that compared to flickr (pre-new version).

Not only has Thea Lamkin disabled her comments on her photostream but she's only been a member since Oct 2010...what right does she have over the people who have been here for years!!?? what makes her the know it all be all!!?? And her photostream is lame, she is just the type who is catering to all the other corporate money grubbing hipsters out there.....bring the old flickr back for those true photographers who deserve a listen....we're not old, we like organization, style, functionality, and not in your face clutter.

I haven't read all 130 odd pages, so this may have been said
When using the arrows at the sides to scroll through photos, it doesn't stay on the set if you select it, it reverts to the photostream order by default and is, to be polite about it, v - annoying.

I am displeased with the new changes to Flickr's Home page, Photostream page, Photo page and Set page -- they're unclear and bombastic. The simplicity and clarity of the old Flickr site design was something I was really fond of. Aside from its functionality, I also liked that the old site did not resemble the layout of common social media sites like Facebook, Google Plus, etc. (as it does now). It's really an unfortunate change.

"My suspicion is that there is something about this new layout that Flickr regards as more conducive to advertising"

Their target market is now those on mobile devices and these are also the target for their advertising strategy. There's not a lot of screen space on a mobile device so white space is not good and the justified format they've now forced on everyone is what works best.

If they gave us an option to switch it on or off we wouldn't use it and that's not good for the mobile market they're targeting.

I don't really think they care that much. Say they lose 5% of their users but up their revenues by 10% from advertising that's a win for them. We're just collateral damage on the way to profit.

Not what I paid for as PRO. Sooooooooooooo slow. Time to make the move to Smug Mug. Prefer to pay more for a quality product than skimp & put up with this unexpected slap in the face. Never lose sight of the fact that when people pay money to you they are customers and should be respected. This unsolicited wholesale change demonstrates a complete disregard of any respect!

Blacking out was popular during the SOPA campaign.. Flickr used it as a powerful tool then, wonder how they'd feel if their user content driven site suddenly had no publicly accessible content?

It's not a better, brighter flickr.

It's dark, dingy, crowded, and claustrophobic, and you can't see anything without scrolling. Scroll scroll scroll is now the flickr experience. Actually, scroll click scroll click, since you have to click to see older comments.

One major consequence has been to lose the collegiate social feeling where conversations were integral to the pics. Now they're missing all round, the description is mostly missing, old comments lost, everything is work to find in this dark and gloomy underground world.

The timehonoured mantra of document editors is "white space is gold, use white space for all sorts of reasons" has not just been ignored but trashed. Not only no white, but no space either.

The new layout is not relaxing or pleasant and just plain hard work.

Poor tumblr -- look what's coming!

It's sad because obviously flickr has talented people who have drive and committment working for it, but the high level decisions seem to be made by ... by people who just don't get what we like liked about flickr. It must be very dispiriting for those forced to work hard on universally disliked stuff.

Once again, what does flickr management use for input? Where do they get their feedback and guidance as to what works? Clearly not from their requested feedback or help forums, all studiously ignored for years.

Why is it so hard to be responsive and communicative?

Why is it so hard to avoid lurching off into a bad byway and convince yourself it's wonderful when any number of people will tell you the obvious?

gauchocat: Flickr did ask for input for a few days from the poor bucket brigade, but as far as I can see studiously ignored everything that was said except for a couple of bugs.

I really wonder how flickr does test its concepts.

Turn on the lights again please.

As a UX designer, the one thing that should work is that when you resize your browser, the site should dynamically change the size of images.

Currently on my Mac with Chrome, you have to reload the page to have it resize the content on the page.

First rule of UX:
EVERYONE hates CHANGE

The second rule?
Change, in the end, is the only way to move forward.

So I paid for Pro for nothing then?

Anyway, I can take the new look -- though I do think it's a bit of a knee jerk to the competition rather than a way of keeping it distinctive. I also think that the removal of PRO is a huge mistake -- it was one of the things that attracted me to the service and made me spend (no point renewing that, then). It made this a distintive service much different to the competitors (Instagrams horrible squares were becoming sooooo pervasive). All the things I liked about Flickr -- gone.

However, for me the worst thing currently is the speed of the thing. It's slow, and sometimes things seem not to load at all. Why? Coz you didn't think about that, that's why.

Thea Lamkin:

The new flickr look makes me sad. There are too many photos thrown together on the page, and the navigational aids are too hard to find. I feel like I'll begin losing interest in flickr as it's harder to use now. Not as clean. Not as much necessary white space around each photo. Way too cluttered.

Please let us have a choice between the new and old look. I just don't like all those narrow slats of overlapping partial photos on the opening page. It is off putting.

Save that sort of look for your next art school project, ok

Don´t like this new version, it´s not user friendly and Flickr has lost all its "charm", would like better the old format.

I want to publish and share in a clever, neat, simple way... and I want photos to have their own space in order to appreciate them... now, that is impossible

I am considering to explore new sites where upload my photos

I just had an amazing thing happen. I clicked on the 'more photos' link from a group homepage and instead of a justified view I got the normal small sized photos more in line with the capabilities of my 512 MB of un-upgradable RAM.

Do you think that staff could have saved us all a lot of grief if they just admitted that they released this upgrade just a little bit too soon or at least that it was going to take a few days for all things to settle?

I can't say that I understand how Flickr thinks. Is communicating with your customers verboten?
