One Thousand Cranes
If you peer closely around Utata, and indeed the rest of Flickr, you might notice that some strange creatures have started to appear:

Multi-coloured paper cranes are appearing in all sorts of unlikely places. These cranes are all the work of our very own Liz Shuman who has set herself the ambitious (some might say crazy) goal of sending out one thousand paper cranes across the world. All she asks in return is that recipients take a photograph of their crane when they receive it and send her a print. I think the whole thing is a wonderful idea - I'm always amazed by the creativity and inventiveness shown by folk round here.
If you want to read more about the Paper Crane project and see how you can join in and get a crane of your own, Liz has set up a group about it here.
Now, folding a thousand cranes is one thing. Buying the paper, the envelopes and the stamps to send them out across the globe is another. rebeccamissing is very generously auctioning off some of his polaroids to raise funds to help cover Liz's costs. There's some excellent stuff in his stream, so it will be well worth paying attention here! The first one is open for bids right now.

I know, isn't this a cool project. After seeing one in one of my contact's stream, I promptly signed up.
That is a very cool project, I signed up . I already have some ideas of how to photograph the little bird.
Yeah, I love this project and was really happy when I got my crane in the mail. Yay, Liz!
Very cool! I've been folding cranes for years, because when you fold 1000, your dearest wish is supposed to come true.
I wish on each one I fold, because I lost count a long time ago and who knows, the next one might be the one!
Going to sign up as well...

Dave, you rock. :-) And, of course, so does (the totally crazy; trust me) Liz!
my friend used to have to make 1000 cranes if she did something wrong at school, that was the rules...

Liz is a peach. I've long been a fan. I'm not surprised that she's developed and implemented such an exceedingly cool idea.

this is great.
i remember i had to make 500 cranes for my wedding back in 2005. 3 different sizes, 2 different styles. it took 23 hours total to complete them.
and to this day, i still find some of them around our apartment that weren't 'up to par' for my wife.
so my hat's off to this project. i hope it works out well.

I think it's a brilliant (and generous) idea ... and I love my crane.
I can't wait to see what she does with all the photos.
and I'm off now to check out the auction to help Liz's project ... I know the postage for this must be overwhelming for her.

Liz is such a creative sweet-pea. I look forward to receiving her gift and sending along my image of it. We hope to assist her in showing the collection at The Peace Abbey in Sherborn MA when she is ready. It would be a perfect place for people to enjoy and appreciate her creativity and compassion.
Yay, Liz!

thank you so much... the support is appreciated more than you can imagine.
along with George's auctions of his Polaroids (which are going amazingly well i might add), i've also decided to do a limited edition of this Holga shot. it's available here if anyone is interested... and i sure hope someone is! obviously all procceds from the sale of the print will go to purchasing supplies for this crazy idea of mine.

I've just noticed that George's third Polaroid is now up for auction
-- from rebeccamissing - (?)
There's only two more to go - so start bidding now if you want one of these
And in other news, our very own 10 cent designer has kindly put this print up for auction:

i wanted to pop in here to say, overnight Google suspended (disabled) the email account i was using for the paper crane project. i've sent them a message about it and i'm just waiting, not very patiently, for a response to find out what happened and why they deemed that the email account was violating their terms of service.
which is to say, if you would like to participate (or contact me via that email address) i'll ask you to wait on the emails as they'll just be returned to you as "undeliverable".
as soon as this mess is ironed out, i'll post an update here there and everywhere :)

hi, just wanted to let the Utata public know that George has put up his fourth Polaroid for auction and it's a beaut!
also, the participant numbers are still hovering around 350 so if you know anyone who'd like to receive a crane pass along the word!

indeed, and he's saved the best for last... in my opinion...
also, the number of participants is still hovering somewhere around 350 so if you want a crane definitely send an email (with your mailing address) to:

Ok, so here they are

@ eshu----------- can not say thank you enough. Having a blast shooting this little fella. I will shoot a few more simply because I just realized how to make the wings stay out more and have it stand up right. I had not pulled them out enough yet in the previous shots for it to stand on it's own.

I am *so* excited. My crane arrived today and I have to say 1) if dd's friend, 9 yo Hadley hadn't been visiting, I would not have known to blow up inside the crane from the bottom to inflate and 2) she's beautiful! We dscussed her name at some length and finally she informed us she likes Naomi. Of course, she arrived after dark so the photos so far are shot at a very high ISO. The first thing Naomi did was ride with me to take the children to the sitters. She perches beautifully on the dashboard, even if I do I have to shoot at 800 to capture.

I too received a crane a few days ago. I took a few pics, but I intend to take some more.
I hope some folks have noticed that Liz's project has been on the front page of the flickr blog-it was there yesterday, anyway, maybe still?
Congrats on the burgeoning interest and the beauty of your project, Liz.
HUGS!

Oh yes, Foster the crane is loving his new home:

and although Tag has his reservations about this new addition, Mercury has taken the little fledgling under his curly ears:

Thanks, Liz! I love it. :) Emma will be taking the photo of her crane this weekend, and we'll be sending out our prints to you on Monday.

I missed the launch of the site somehow. Thanks for letting us know.
I must admit, I do loves me my new paper crane:

So, I'm curious, fellow receivers of paper cranes.. what size print did you send to Liz? I'm waffling between a 4x6 or maybe something more wowsome.

I sent a 5x7, but I'm sure Liz will be happy to get it, regardless of the size.
