I'm heading to west Texas on Thurs or Fri. I'm taking photos of whatever I want. The assignment is to do "Kirk" art and then write about the experience. I'll be away from the studio for seven or eight days and I'm driving all over the place. Alpine, Marathon, Marfa, Balmorhea, and the Davis Mountains. I'm always curious about what other people bring on trips like this so I thought I'd give you my list of gear:

EP-2 with kit lens and Nikon 50mm 1.2 (for video)
Tascam DR100 audio recorder and Rode Videomic (for audio)
Olympus E3 with the 35-100mm
Olympus E30 with the 14-35 mm
Gitzo Carbon fiber tripod with Arcatech head
Profoto 600b power pack and head for high powered flash.
Two light stands, one soft box and one circular diffuser.
Sekonic Light Meter
10 eight gig CF cards
6 eight gig SD cards

That's it. Should fit in the element alongside a sleeping bag and a case of water from Costco.

thinking about taking the 25 pancake as well but I don't want to complicate things.....

Heading West to Texas (Austin) on Sunday. Minimalist that I am, I will be taking:
E3
7-14mm
14-50mm
50-200mm
A dozen 8 gig CF cards
Macbook Pro
tripod
two boxes of granola bars
case of water
Why don't I bring 1/2 of the supplies and you bring the rest and we can swap half way? (LOL)

For the west Texas journey I'm taking my (hopefully) trustworthy Honda Element. Great photo car.

The great American road trip: a time-honored tradition! I will definitely be interested in seeing what you come home with, both in photos and experiences. Seems like the 24-35 and 35-100 would have you pretty well covered, no lens changing, and you have a nice range there.

Someday, I want to ride my bicycle from one coast to another, and photograph the entire trip. I had better start saving my vacation days now.

True about the pancake complicating things. If you take it, you might not get to use the rest of your gear!

No ultrawide for a grand vista type of shot?
I would think two bodies with an ultrawide zoom, normal zoom, and a telephoto zoom with two bodies may be a versatile idea.

Kirk> A nice setup, but I would not take off without my Zuiko 8mm!

Which leads me to wonder whether you even have an 8mm?
Or whether you might think, as a pro photographer, that the 8mm is only useful for fun images?

Road trips are great! I need to plan a getaway on the road soon. About 5 years back, I took one across the western states for no reason, driving alone, for no other purpose but to drive. I had my trust Nikon Coolpix 2100, 2MP in all its glory. Some time back I took those pictures and slapped them together. Here is it reloaded onto vimeo, hope you like it

I was thinking the same as Tee_Why. No 7-14?

If you had listed a film camera I would have offered up some PKR64; I still have 10 rolls left, and wanted to get out to west Texas with some of it, but don't have reliable transportation. A memory of breaking down out there in the mid 80's, many miles east of Ft Stockton, in the middle of the night, makes me shudder at the thought of a repeat.

Will you be including the Pecos river canyon and the Prada store in Marfa? (even though they've been done to death, they haven't been *done* by Kirk)

Edit: Watch where you step at night ... those Rattlers come out then!
MistyDaze Posted 15 years ago
Speaking of rattlers---snake gators come in handy. ;-) We use them for work fairly regularly. Something of a pain in the ass if it's hot out, but better than a big pain in the leg!! ;-P

Unrelated: The Davis Mountains is the only mountain range in the US contained entirely within a single county!

@ kik.rev2.0 Yes, SXSW. The magazine is sending me to cover the event and also the Austin Vintage Guitar Show in the same venue 3 days previous.
Leaving SD Sunday, driving and will no doubt stop by the "big ditch" on the way.

Not too much of a wide angle fan. If I didn't have a book project to do I'd just take the 14-35 and shoot everything with that. In the old film days I'd pretty much be happy shooting everything with a 50mm on the front of any brand of camera. The 14-35 gives me some options. The 35-100 is too nice to leave behind.

I owned the Nikon 10.5 mm and did some work with it. But I just don't "see" much wider than 28mm and I don't "see" much longer than 100mm on the e system. Leaving the longer glass behind as well.

The snake gators are a great idea.

I had my 7-14 mounted on my E-P2 last weekend. It worked well.

Hey. r.moreira32. We will have a booth at the AVGS. Stop by and say hello. We'll even have an E-1 handy.
