Bulkr is a complete solution to backup, browse and download photos on Flickr. I needed to download all my photos from Flickr but could not find a tool to do that on Mac. So here is one that works on Mac, Windows and Linux!

More than 180 million photos have been downloaded with Bulkr!

Features:
◆ Backup your entire photostream with a click of a button
◆ Download your sets (a folder is created for every set)
◆ Download photos in 4 different sizes
◆ Download title, tags, description (write to photo EXIF)
◆ Preview images before download
◆ Resume download if connection breaks
◆ Download upto 500 photos in batches from:
→ Your photostream (also search within your photostream)
→ Your favorites
→ Any Flickr group
→ Explored photos
→ Flickr search (only Creative Commons licensed photos)
→ Any user's photostream (only if user has enabled download)

Bulkr respects Flickr privacy settings. Your photos cannot be download by others if your privacy settings does not allow it. Please read this FAQ for details.

*Olivier is Back ! ... but busy. says:

Huh ... Not a good deal for me ...

This lets anybody access pictures that i do not want anybody to blog outside of flickr. Even if it does not give an access to large and original pics, the pictures one can download exceed the size in which they appear on streams or on picture page, and in the uploading resolution. This exceed a normal using of flickr, i mean. For i.e, it seems working fine even if I remove its permission to access in my acount.

I'd just like to have any explanation about those facts. Maybe i'm wrong, who knows... Thanks in advance.

[01/11 - 2009 : Edit] : I note that the new app (v.0.16beta) has been corrected and don't let download copyrighted materials no more. By the way, it becomes a great app. Congratulations for this coding job which could be usefull. I appreciate the effort made for the quick corrections.

ρrakaz (Digital Monk) says:

@Olivier: Your concern is understandable, but your photo's privacy settings are respected. Bulkr will not let anyone download your original or large size photos if you have disabled that in your photo settings. And if the user's photo settings allows to download large size photos, any other 3rd party app including Bulkr will be able to access them. You can go to clipyourphotos.com/bulkr/size-reference and see the warning message on top which says large and original photos may not be available for download by Bulkr.

Please try it out on your photos and check for yourself. And I suggest you change your photo's privacy settings to not allow large size download through Flickr's website or any 3rd party application if you don't want anyone to access them!

*Olivier is Back ! ... but busy. says:

No my privacy settings are not respected ... I have dowloaded some of my pics from a friend not "linked" account ... It comes in a size wich is more than 10x15cm - 300 ppp, so who'd like to put those on any websites could do it. It can understand the same process when it comes with 72 ppp pictures (in the same size) ... not the way it comes yet.

Just understand (and i'm not the only one) ...
1. flickr is for me a way to make a saving file of my work. Some of my pictures come in a very large size ... The way i could dowload those ones (in what you could call a medium size), even not connected to my account, lets me print them near the A3 size ...

2. My account does not have third party or API permission (2nd and 3rd unchecked).

3. This app lets anyone download pictures even if their owners don't let any access at the "all size" button on their picture pages ... The way you're app goes let use a substitute to this setting.

I could undestand the idea you developed ... But i think it could be better for anyone if it was really respecting the settings we decided to use.

@Oliveier: I stand corrected. This is a bug in the application (app still in beta). Right now it doesn't seem to be reading the settings for each individual photo. As a result it allows you to download the large size photo (not original). I will fix this in the next version. Thanks for your feedback!

EDIT: This has been fixed in the latest version - v0.16 beta

Guttorm Flatabø says:

@Olivier: Please remember that the "Allowing downloads" settings are just there as a way for you to discourage people from downloading original sized photos. As Flickr themselves put it on the settings page: "* By "discourage" we do mean simply "discourage". Please understand that if a photo can be viewed in a web browser, it can be downloaded. The transparent image overlaid on the photo will not keep your images safe from theft, and is intended only as a slight hindrance to downloading."

Does not mean that prakaz cant choose to obey those settings, of course. But if you really need to keep your photos private you need to make them private, you can then use guest passes to share them.

ρrakaz (Digital Monk) says:

@Guttorm: Thats a really good point, thanks for that! When you upload photos to Flickr, all 5 sizes sizes, including large (except original) can be downloaded via the browser regardless of all the whiz-bang privacy settings of the photo.

Here how to do it:

If the following is the medium size of this photo

farm4.static.flickr.com/3607/3465465593_2c400 48c96.jpg

different sizes can be accessed simply by adding a letter at the end of the photo name, like below!

farm4.static.flickr.com/3607/3465465593_2c400 48c96_s.jpg Square: s
farm4.static.flickr.com/3607/3465465593_2c400 48c96_t.jpg Thumbnail: t
farm4.static.flickr.com/3607/3465465593_2c400 48c96_m.jpg Small: m
farm4.static.flickr.com/3607/3465465593_2c400 48c96_b.jpg Large: b

URL to original files are different and cannot be accessed just by adding a letter.

Anyhow, I understand Olivier's concern and will implement his feature request in the next version.

Thanks for doing this, and putting it out there for people to use. Don't listen to the haters - this is good work!! People with the intent to steal or do wrong will always find a way. If you lock the door they find a window! Limit the perms and keep on working - this is outstanding.

@Wizum: Jackass protection: No cars should be able to drive drive more than 25 mph in city areas, no guns should be able to work outside shooting fields, all bit torrent clients should only be able to download DRM protected material, and Flickr should remove the download functionality from all photos on the whole site and the "save this photo" functionality on all internet browsers should be removed :-)

This is from my point of view not the way to make people responsible. The record and movie industry never succeeded in following that path. I'm in the newspaper business. Jackasses can copy and paste our stories. We just live with it and we don't spend money on preventing them from doing it.

I love Bulkr!

Guys, will you chill? I would not like to have my pictures stolen, BUT realistically, I think anyone who is already making money off their photos is not keeping their entire full-size portfolio on flickr. And if they are and they think their photos are safe...hm, well, they need to realise how the internet works.

I'm sorry to say but usually the people who cry loudest about copyright protection are those who have nothing worth stealing. The web will NEVER be secure enough for you to be able to display your work without giving someone the opportunity to steal it. You have to learn to live with this fact, and either upload your photos with the knowledge that they are always at risk of being stolen, or upload nothing at all.

Flickr very clearly states in its terms that it can't promise your pictures will be safe from people who know their way around code.

That said, I think apps like this one should respect privacy settings, if only out of common decency, and perhaps a wish to appear credible. Sounds like that is going to be implemented, though, so I'm happy. :) Downloading this app right now, it's just what I need. Thank you!

It would be great if Bulkr could ask for the guest pass and cousin Abe could download my entire set.

What about changing the file name to the title used for the image? I know your not too keen on adding the "Comments" into the IPTC metadata of the image (even though it gives the image its original meaning and makes it easier to search for), but surely you could agree that "A proper Title" is better than "DSC_1002".

Don't want to nag but I can't bring myself to use the PC solution that does embed the IPTC.

ρrakaz (Digital Monk) says:

Hmm, that's what Bulkr currently does. All downloaded photos are given the title as their filename. And if the filename already exists then the photo id from flickr (which is always unique) is appended to the end of the title.

This is a really impressive application, except for one problem I've run into. If the titles of many photos aren't unique and they are too long Bulkr can't create a new unique file name for them and it just keeps overwriting the files it just downloaded
For example, with around twenty photos with the same name, "Wildflowers at Rio Vista Natural Resource Park" I'm left with only two downloaded since all the Flickr files names start with 499 and the rest is truncated:
Wildflowers at Rio Vista Natural Resource Park.jpg
Wildflowers at Rio Vista Natural Resource Park-449.jpg
Is there any workaround for this? Have I missed some setting to change Bulkr's behavior?

Hi D. To answer your questions:

1) Bulkr has been tested with 10k+ photo download (in one batch), so yes, it should probably scale to your 21k+ photos. It has a feature to resume download, in case the connection drops during download.

2) This feature was added in the latest version which was made available just minutes ago! (the metadata is currently saved to a .txt file. Future version will have robust support for this)

3) Currently video download is not supported but this feature will eventually make it in the app in future versions.

4) Yep totally! (Also photos can be downloaded in 6 different sizes)

Hope this helps. And If you have any issue with the app, pls don't hesitate to send me a FlickrMail. I'll be glad to help :)

Hi!.. You are doing a great job!..
But I have this problem with the latest version:
I view the photos by 200s or 500s. I click the ones (let's say 10) I like to save to my PC. I push the download button, choose 'large/original' and choose the folder. When I click OK, it downloads only a few of them and keeps on counting over, without downloading the rest I've chosen!!! I mean the small window keeps counting over like '11 of 10 complete' but only 3 of 10 is complete. Strange, right? :)
I hope I could make myself clear :)
Thanks,
Nicole

Thanks for mentioning that. It's probably a bug. Will look into it.
