@neptune000, and anybody else confused...

The site isn't designed very well, so it's sort of hard to grasp why it's not showing up, so I'll clarify (note: l'm not involved with the project).

- It's an Adobe Air application, which means you just have to have Adobe Air installed (it's free, similar to Flash Player, and bundled with a lot of other apps [like tweetdeck]). It will work across PCs and Macs (and Linux too).

- The application is still under development with a release scheduled for "around the first of the year 2010", or sometime in January (hopefully).

Corey,

Thanks for clarifying for us. Your summary is spot on. I guess the site was clear enough for you to grasp.

We hope to make the site a bit more clear to all when we launch private beta come first of the year.

I would only add support for characters in another languages in the titles. I cannot write things such as: ñ, á, etc..

The other problem I encountered is about the creation of sets. I created a new set to include six photos and the uploader created the same set six times. The result wasn't one set including my six photos, but six different sets with the same title.

The Geotagging functionality is GREAT though. I highly recommend it. It is based in google maps, rather than the obsolete and very incomplete Yahoo Maps interface that Flickr uses. You can find the exact spot where you took your pictures very easily.

This is a great start! I will be waiting for the definitive version.

my preferences:

- could the zoom see an even larger image
- is there a rotate-image?

curious, is there a file size limit on uploading videos? Just got the latest version but it won't let me do a video. No errors, simply no results or anything.

The Good Uploadr says:

There are file size limitations on video. These limitations are the same imposed by flickr. The uploadr should have loaded in a thumbnail with a message over it saying "file size too big".

If you'd like to submit a support ticket, please do so at support.thegooduploadr.com with some specifics about the movie file extension / type and size.

Thanks!

Sounds .. GOOD. Question tho about privacy and motivation.
a- Is it secure, and how do I know it is? Issue is security breaches are a total pain to deal with - negating potential use benefits
b- Motivation - so are you offering this tool as a way to advertise your technical services (a very nice way, should I say )

Also, is there somewhere a review of various uploaders - question is to avoid app bloat and wasted eval time.

Finally have you also considered an uploader for smugmug ?

Tried this today.

Main advantage over other uploadrs I've tried:
Geotagging. I like that I can add to the map before uploading.

Disadvantages:
*It doesn't load (into the application) the titles, tags and descriptions that I've saved with the image file (other uploadrs *do* this) -- though this description did upload with the file; it simply doesn't display in the application.
*It added a period (".") at the end of each line break when the upload was complete
*It removed the title, replacing it with the file name

The Good Uploadr says:

 ajpscs: Glad you're enjoying it.

NYC.andre: A. Unsure what you're asking in terms of security? It is a desktop application and thus does not have the security risks that a web app has. Furthermore, it uses Flickr's authentication protocol and thus does not store any sensitive data such as passwords locally. B. We were frustrated by the lack of a quality tool to upload and perform many useful tasks on Flickr, so we decided to build our own. As for an uploadr comparison chart, we've not seen one. Perhaps we'll try and make one and post on theGood Uploadr site. We have not considered smugmug yet. We do have hopes to incorporate various other platforms however.

Saint: Do you mean it isn't loading in exif or meta data that you added directly to the image through another program? It will replace the title with the file name only if you do not specify a title. Otherwise you can add titles.

Wil C. Fry says:

"It will replace the title with the file name only if you do not specify a title. Otherwise you can add titles."

I *have* added titles in metadata prior to uploading. I always do. And all other uploaders (including Flickr's upload page) recognize the titles that I've added. For some reason, this uploader doesn't notice that I'd pre-added the title.

It *does* however recognize my descriptions and tags, though it adds periods to the end of each line in the description.

Don't get me wrong; I LOVE the interface you've come up with, and the progress bar is great too. :-) Geotagging is a huge plus, though I couldn't find a way to view Google's satellite image -- only the map.

Keep up the good work. :-)

Nice app! I love the rich feature set like adding to groups and Geo-tagging. Just a few suggestions:
-Rework the scrolling for the thumbs on the left. It's a bit jerky and hard to get at the photos at the start and end of the batch. Maybe add a scroll bar on the right of the thumbs window?
-Allow the app to be resized for larger screens.
-There seems to be an issue with the app remembering when a photo has been rotated. Some remain rotated when opening the app again and some revert back. I had rotated these photos in camera or while downloading, not sure why they didn't get picked up in the app.

Minor stuff really, keep up the great work!

Seems ok, trying to upload 1GB of photos seems to eat 1GB of ram and takes forever to process...

Also the units stated are "mb" aka millibits, it should be "MB", megabytes.

tarmo888 says:

Biggest problem is that tags are messed up if you add more than one tag and there is IPTC location data in file.

Also, it is very confusing how to add multiple tags at once, like other uploaders do. Couldn't figure out how to make them separate if added all at once.

Files with geo data in EXIF are automatically detected by Flickr, but are not recognize in this uploader, so the GEOTAG tab is also kind of useless - it doesn't show where the image is already positioned.

Unusable in current state, I have to uninstall it.
Posted 44 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

The Good Uploadr says:

tarmo888 - We've had no bug reports of tags being messed up. Given that this is several versions deep I'm sure we would have discovered or they would have been reported by now.

Adding multiple tags is simple. Start to type a tag and the Uploadr suggests completions. Simply tab down to pick one of those or just hit enter to add a tag. You could also add them with a comma delimited list just like the Flickr Uploadr.

The geo tab is not useless at all. In fact the majority of our users tag their photos with it. If your photos already have geo-data embedded in them then there is no need for you to use the map, right?

We're sorry you got frustrated with the app. If you'd like to sumbit bugs or learn more you can use support.thegooduploadr.com

It's not unusable. Thousands of people agree.

Thanks.

tarmo888 says:

Thanks for the response.

I just re-installed Flickr Uploadr to confirm that it doesn't use comma delimited list for tags, just like Flickr itself doesn't (space is a delimiter, quotes for multiple words). If you put commas to tags field, same tag mess happens as it did with your uploader, only difference is that Flickr Uploadr shows IPTC location data as tags by default, theGood Uploadr tags field is empty.

The Geo tab is useless in this use case:
User makes a photo between skyscrapers, EXIF location will be positioned one block away from real position because of bad signal. User adds file to uploader and can't confirm if it will be uploaded with correct location, because existing location was not shown.
Posted 44 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

The Good Uploadr says:

Correct, it does not use comma delimiters. It does use quotes for multiple word tags. It's actually type a tag, hit enter, and repeat then type a long string of text remember to comma delimit each. Hence, the choice we made.

The geo tab is useless because you can't place a photo between two skyscrapers? You got us there :)

For some reason, it didn't retain the captions I had added to some of the photos and I had to type them in on flickr, but maybe I did something wrong at my end...minor issue at this stage. I enjoyed using it and will definitely keep using it! :-)

 saori: We concur :)

Schub@: We've heard from others that want a more traditional scrollbar. We've decided its so much easier to scroll while dragging thumbnails this way. Glad you like the app.

Alphafish: Resize what? Photos? The app allows you to immediately open it in your favorite image editing program for resizing. This is much better than an app compressing your images, trust.

groups names which have non-standard characters in the name (eg ô © ® etc) don't appear in the list of available groups in the tool... so I have to post to those groups separately after uploading. Similar to another character related question above....

I also cannot get the geo mapping function to work. When I grab the photo and drag it to the map it stays grabbed and simply follows my cursor wherever the cursor moves on the map, even when I've released my left click button. Clicking the map does nothing, and if I'm supposed to click on the "Click to add to the map" graphic I cannot because, as I said, the photo follows my cursor as long as I am on the map even with the left click button released. I am running Win 7

Just went onto Flickr, App also did not upload Tags that I had entered.
