Peniscola is a municipality of Valencia, Spain, located on the north coast of the province of Castellón, in the region of Lower Domain. It has a population of 7894 inhabitants (INE 2009).
The city is situated on a rocky peninsula, originally joined to the mainland only by a sandy isthmus, which was easy to defend, occasionally flooded and the isthmus was buried under the sea water. Currently, due to the construction of the harbor and the buildings on the isthmus, this curious fact has gone. On the rock stands the old town, which stands the castle of Papa Luna.
Prehistory and Antiquity

They are abundant archaeological remains found near the isthmus, in the fields and Els Poaig Barrancs, confirming the population of the area for some people Iberian (ilercavones), and the relationship between them and the Phoenician merchants who arrived by sea (VII-VI century BC.). In Peñíscola settled probably the Phoenicians from Tyre and soon after the Greek Zakynthos. Later would come by sea Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines and Arabs.
Peñíscola, Greek and Roman colony, it will be important port through which manufactured goods enter (ceramics, textiles, weapons, etc.). The settlers exchanged for the precious wine and olive oil from the Iberians who inhabited the mountains to the coast.
Middle Ages

From the year 718 Tarik concludes that the conquest until 1233, the city of Peniscola living under Muslim rule. Few details are known at this time. Arab geographers refer to Peniscola (which call Baniskula Banáskula or by adaptation of the name to its alphabet) as impregnable castle by the sea, which is populated, has farms, crops, plenty of salt water and important. From the fortress, which will border with the Christendom, the Moors made pirate raids along the coast and in Catalonia.

Peniscola is the birthplace of famous people like King Lobo 'Mohamed ben San, Aben Mardanis' (1124) who manage to keep a Muslim kingdom in the southeast of the Iberian peninsula Berbers against the invaders, and the writer Ali Albat, intervening in the negotiations with King James I.

Although he had tried in 1225 besieged for two months, not until 1233 when James I take possession of the town of Peniscola, also recovering dominion over the sea. It will be a peaceful conquest. After the fall of Burriana that isolates the Muslims of North Castle, the city will be delivered without a fight and under certain agreements which respect the laws and customs Saracens.
On January 28, 1251, however, James I of Aragon town charter granted to the city charter of Valencia, under which dispossess the Moors of all properties that deliver goods to the new Christian settlers. This measure will encourage the demographic and economic consolidation of the city, beginning a period of prosperity.
Between 1294 and 1307 was built the present castle Templar on the remains of the Arab fortress.
