Flickr Schedulr is a Windows desktop application that automatically uploads pictures and videos to Flickr based on a schedule (e.g. to post a new picture every day at a certain time). This effectively takes the hassle of uploading pictures and videos at regular intervals away, and allows you to go out and have fun shooting pictures (or drinking beer) while your photoblog is maintained for you.

Of course, you don't have to schedule your uploads, it's also a fine stand-alone Flickr upload tool as it is. It allows you to create a queue of files to be uploaded, along with their titles, descriptions, tags, photosets and groups into which they should end up, and lots of other details. You can group them into batches that should be uploaded together. And a flexible plugin mechanism adds tons of other functionality - like automatically importing metadata, determining photosets and groups, monitoring folders for new files, and modifying pictures or videos before they are uploaded (e.g. to resize, add watermarks or borders).

After a few days of using this, I noticed that it quickly scooped up RAM to the point of killing the program.

I have solved this by disabling the "show picture previews in the picture list" option. Now it works fine, but I have to remove already-uploaded photos from the list once in a while to save on the RAM.

Nice app; I'm using it every day.

If it is then it should be introduced on webbased uploading also.

Great uploader. Almost uninstalled all the other uploaders I had, but there are some issues:

* Some videos (which uploaded fine via other uploaders) can't be uploaded, returns "filetype not recognised", you might want to check this out www.flickr.com/groups/api/discuss/72157623363 010583/
* Application is not responsive when uploading
* I am using Schedulr maximized, but it doesn't remember a window state next time I launch it.
* Videos doesn't have thumbnails in preview box (not that big issue anyways)
* Safety settings would be nice

Hi all,

Just a quick note to let you know that the new v2.0 release is available! It's been completely rewritten and supports a lot of the features you suggested here (e.g. a better user interface, assign safety, content type and license, create the scheduled task directly from the application, ...).

Go get it from schedulr.codeplex.com and let me know what you think!

I was glad to see the update... I love Schedulr.

My notes on v2.0:

*The interface looks fabulous.
*It's now much easier to add multiple accounts and to switch between accounts

Other than that, I haven't had a good experience with it.

*Schedulr now requires 100% of my processor power for most actions
*Now I have to wait for hundreds of set and group icons to download
*If I select more than one image, the set/group icons load *again* for some reason.

But the biggest deal-breaker is that I simply could not get it to upload at all. It acts like it's uploading, takes the normal amount of time and bandwidth, and then says upload failed...

Hopefully these notes will be useful to you (or possibly it's just my machine -- I hope others have better luck with it.) :-)

Thanks for all your feedback. Some comments:

- Regarding CPU: you probably need a "newish" machine for v2.0 because it can indeed get processor intensive. That said, I run it on a 3 year old laptop and it works fairly well for me. Wil, any scenario in particular where it takes 100% CPU or is it just all the time?
- Regarding the downloading of set and group images: I've noticed this as well, it shouldn't happen but it does so I still need to figure out why it keeps downloading them. Sorry about that.
- Regarding uploading errors: I've seen reports of this as well but all I can think of is that there are indeed connection issues. If the connection drops while uploading it will fail of course. Are you on a wireless network or always wired? Wil, can you send me (through FlickrMail) the contents of the log file with the uploads that filed? If you go to the Accounts screen you can click "Open Log File" and that gives me all the details of what happened when so maybe I can figure something out from that.

Thanks all, I hope I'll be able to fix some of these issues...

"any scenario in particular where it takes 100% CPU or is it just all the time"

Not all the time. :-) Only when dealing with a largish photostream. My account, for instance, has over 300 sets, and I belong to about 300 groups. v2.0 wants to reload the icons for each group and set every time I select a different batch or image at left (instead of using the same icons it loaded just a second earlier).

With my wife's account (just a few sets & groups), it runs much more easily.

"Are you on a wireless network or always wired?"

Always wired (through cable modem)... Next time I attempt to upload a few images, if anything fails, I'll send you the log file. :-)

Thank you for your response.

Hi all,

First of all: a big congratulations to Wil C. Fry with the new baby!

The other good news is that I've just released v2.2 with support for uploading videos, and folder monitoring to automatically add new files to the queue.

The new version should also fix the problem that pictures are added to Flickr but don't disappear from the queue (and meanwhile hang the application). The problem that "photographybyaandm" mentions about the application crashing all the time as soon as you have a schedule set up should be fixed as well.

You also get the option of disabling icons for sets and groups so if you have a lot of them it should no longer slow down the application. I'll probably put an option in the next version to also disable picture previews.

So head over to schedulr.codeplex.com, give it a try and let me know what you think!

Thanks for the new features and updates. Here are list of issues I have found in v2.*

* Photos are still not as responsive as they were in v1.4. Text only mode is faster when drag-dropping, but I guess those white borders still act as images. Selecting/unselecting is still slow.
* It was possible to open the photos in default program in v1.4 by clicking the image box on the right. There is no box in v2.3, but it would be nice if double-clicking on file path would open the default program.
* It says "No location defined", but all my photos are already geotagged with Geosetter. If I click Set Location it opens the map from 0;0 coordinates or last position used, but if Schedulr could recognize EXIF location data then this feature could be useful for those who have geotagged their photos with cameraphones and want correct/remove the existing location.
* I un-checked "Auto Retrieve Metadata", but it still loads data to description field (IPTC Caption) and after uploading to Flickr, I also see IPTC Location names added as tags. The former looks like Schedulr bug, but I am not sure about the latter, this might be Flickr feature to convert IPTC locations to tags. Could you override those tags if "Auto Retrieve Metadata" is un-checked?
* "Folders to monitor" feature is great, but it would be more useful if sub-folders would be separated as batches. Right now, opening the GUI is still needed if user wants to upload more than one photo per batch.
* Expanded/Collapsed states of Batch (n), Details, Settings, Sets, Groups, Location in Queued/Uploaded/Option screens are not remembered if I launch Schedulr next time.
* If i select all photos and then click on single photo, expected result would be that only this single photo is selected. Current workaround is to click on anywhere else to unselect all and then click on single photo.

"If i select all photos and then click on single photo, expected result would be that only this single photo is selected. Current workaround is to click on anywhere else to unselect all and then click on single photo."

Yes, I've noticed this as well.

Additionally, in 2.2, the sets/groups list only shows up when an image is selected, and then disappears when you unselect as described above. This takes extra time. (In v.1.4, the sets/groups lists were always showing.)

For what it's worth, I don't think either problem is technically a "bug," but it does slow down the workflow a bit.

I've gone back to using 1.4, mainly because there's nothing wrong with it...

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that v2.4 is out, and it contains a number (but not all) of your requests:

- You can now specify if pictures should be visible in public searches.
- An existing geographic location that is embedded in the picture's metadata is now imported when you add the picture to the queue.
- You can now open a picture in its default application by clicking on the file name.
- You can now shuffle the pictures in the queue.
- The expanded/collapsed state is now remembered for all panels (except picture batches - for now).
- You can now manually open and close the selected picture details panel, or lock it so that it doesn't automatically open and close.
- The upload progress shows more detailed progress again (not just on the number of pictures already uploaded but even on the progress of the currently uploading picture).
- For large numbers of pictures in the queue, the performance should be dramatically improved.
- Fixed issue that clicking a single picture didn't select only that picture when multiple pictures were already selected.
- Fixed issue that the "Automatically retrieve metadata from pictures" option wasn't taken into account.

Especially with the performance improvements and the panel locking and remembering expand/collapse states, I really hope you'll like it enough to get off of v1.4 :-)

The next version will focus more on batches with the following feature requests which I hope to get in:

- Importing batches from monitored folders
- Creating a new set for a batch
- Remembering the expanded/collapsed state of batches
- And some other things like automatically reducing the file size if it's too big to upload and sorting and categorizing sets and groups.

As always, head over to schedulr.codeplex.com/ to download the application and let me know what you think (preferably through that site because this page is difficult to follow).

A couple of things:
1) I can't comment at the codeplex site because I don't have an account there. (This page is easy to follow using the Flickr userscript FlickrNotifications.)

2) One thing remaining to get me off v1.4, and it's probably not the fault of Schedulr, but of my own computer settings... On the "Options" page, the check marks and radio buttons do not display for me.

To be clear, the boxes and circles are there, and I can only assume that I've checked the right things, because it's working the way I want it to, but there are no check marks or circular dots in those spaces... Any suggestions?

What if there would be another button next to set location button, which could import a location data from another JPG or sidecar (THM, XMP) file.

I don't know how difficult it is to get that info from XMP, but THM is same as JPG.

This could be very useful for those images which were taken before GPS got a satellite fix or in case person wants to fix one location by importing another photo which he/she know has correct location, or for video files because they usually doesn't have that info or have it in sidecar file.

Hi all,

I just wanted to let you all know that v3.0 is now available at schedulr.codeplex.com/ so head on over and upgrade to the latest and greatest release :-)

What's new?

* You can now configure a new photoset to be created for a batch when it is uploaded.
* You can now sort photosets and groups by name or age.
* You can now use other map providers for setting the geographic location (Bing, Yahoo, OpenStreetMaps) as well as choosing a satellite or hybrid view.
* The expanded/collapsed state is now remembered for batches as well.
* Added support for plugins that can perform actions when certain events happen in the application.

Many new features are now available as plugins that come with the application:

* Backing up the configuration.
* Importing metadata when new files are added to the queue.
* Deleting or moving files after they are uploaded.
* Automatically determining photosets and groups when new files are added to the queue based on the folder they're in.
* Monitoring folders for new files and optionally placing them in separate batches per folder they're in.
* Running arbitrary programs on any event.
* Modifying a picture or video before it is uploaded (adding borders, converting to black & white, cropping, resizing, adding watermarks).

Let me know what you think!

I do like a couple of things about the newest version (3.1).

* It signs into my account almost instantly (whereas v2.4 waited 30 seconds or so)

* The entire app seems to move faster

But I've moved back to v2.4 temporarily. For some reason, 3.1 doesn't always pick up my metadata (description, title, etc.), whereas 2.4 will do it (tested on identical files). Also, even when 3.1 does read the description, etc. from the metadata, it changes the copyright symbol (©) into a question mark (?).

Edited to add:

I really have no problems with v2.4, other than the sign-in ("handshake" with Flickr) that takes so long, but I guess this could be an issue local to me. Overall, I think Schedulr is the best uploader application available for Flickr, and over my nearly six years on Flickr, this app is the most consistently successful for uploading images. :-)

Thanks for the feedback Wil.

I have just given the metadata import functionality a pretty big overhaul in v3.1 and did a lot of testing but maybe there's a few cases I missed. Can you send me a file that works in v2.4 but doesn't in v3.1? That would help tremendously!

Thanks!

I did send you the files; hopefully that will help.

There were six files. For five of them, Schedulr didn't pull up metadata. For the sixth one, it pulled it up, but changed symbols. So I uploaded them via 2.4.

Thanks for the files, it took some time to reproduce the problem because it wasn't occurring on my Windows 7 machine. But after trying it out on a Windows XP machine I saw the problem so I'm guessing that's what you're using.

Anyway, it should be fixed in the latest release (v3.1.4202) which you can get from the usual place.

Thanks for reporting this!

Thanks again. I'll give the next version a try. :-)

(And yes, many of us are still using XP... :-)

Sorry for not returning sooner.

I'm now using the latest version. It loads much more quickly than the previous version (probably because sets/groups are on a separate page?), the images can be sorted more quickly, and the uploads have been going without any trouble.

My favorite version so far. :-)

@ PhotoSmith: Sorry, but the application is Windows only; a Mac or Linux version would mean a complete rewrite because it's based on the Microsoft .NET Framework which is not available on Mac or Linux. (Well, technically, there is the Mono Framework which aims to support most of its features on other platforms, but it still lacks major parts that I depend on.)

@ Wil C. Fry: thanks a lot, glad to hear it's working out for you :-)

It's working! Sorry it's taken so long to try again, hadn't actually realised how long it'd been.

It's absolutely fantastic and is really helping with our workflow. The only (minor) problem we're having is that it only shows some of our groups, maybe we've just got too many!

Thanks for all your hard work with this program.

@photographybyaandm: thanks for confirming that it's working fine now and that you like it!

Actually, I didn't realize but I checked and indeed when I ask Flickr for the groups then it only returns the first 400 groups. So indeed you have a lot of groups :-) And I have to fix it so I retrieve all of them, not just the first 400. Should be an easy fix, so keep your eyes out for an update in the next couple of days.

Thank you for creating a great app!

I have a minor bug to report. The map (bing satellite) feature has a zoom accuracy of 17 (and 18 IIRC), but the flickr api only supports 1-16. Subsequently, uploading photos with an accuracy of 17+ don't get added to the map in flickr..

Jelle Druyts says:

@Daz.: the application limits the zoom accuracy to the maximum supported value of 16. So you shouldn't be able to get 17 or more regardless of the map type that you use. I've tried to reproduce the problem but I always get the maximum value of 16. Can you reproduce it consistently? If there's really a bug somewhere I'd like to fix it in the minor update I was already planning...

Thanks!

Jelle Druyts says:

@Daz.: you're right, apparently the map has a bug that you can still use the scroll wheel to go deeper than the maximum allowed zoom level. I've fixed this in the latest minor update (v3.1.4260) that I just released at schedulr.codeplex.com/.

@photographybyaandm: your issue that you didn't see all your groups should also be resolved in this update (sorry it took a bit longer than I expected due to holidays).

Cheers,

So bummed that this is a Windows-only application...
I appreciate all your effort and I want to support you, if only I could use the software on my iMac!

(I guess I could use Parallels but that's a pain... )

Great idea though!

I have been using it with WMFusion in a Mac, but suddenly it doesn't run and I can't upload photos. It says somethig about the host connection.
Is it a general problem or only a problem with Window's emulators?
