Downloadr is a free tool, written in C#, that allows you to search flickr for photos and download them as a bach in their original (or largest avaiable avaiable) size. If you authenticate downloadr to use your account you can add photos to your flickr favorites and searching will no longer be limited to "safe" content. Downloadr also allows you to create a complete backup of you Flickr photos, maintaining most of their metadata including tags, title, description and location.

That's the risk you run when you publish *anything* on the internet. Just don't allow people to see 'all sizes' and they won't be able to get the full resolution pics.

@Dania: Only if you allow everyone to do so. If you disallowed downloads for your photos then Downloadr will respect these settings.

center: true, but there's a big difference between somebody going through over 2,000 photos and screencapping them and using an app to download a huge whack all at once.

janten: Thank you! That's reassuring.

I miss an option to set my preferences for naming the files - I'd love it if it could create a folder for each set and name the files according to their names on flickr. Of course this would mean that some photos are in many folders at once because they were in multiple sets but I wouldn't bother since it's the same right now on my harddisk photo archive :D

jessicaklieman: You can use your NSID instead. But the problem could also be that your account is not publicly available to the API. Try Extras/Authenticate and then re-do your search.

love the idea of this, though after authenticating it searches for a while like it is finding images, however it returns with zero results. below is the data from the log file:

What software do you use to view the downloaded images? Not every image viewer supports Exif and/or IPTC tags. Try IrfanView (Freeware) to see if the titles really haven't been downloaded.

Nice work! Can there be an option like search by resolution added to the app? I think resolution is available through this API.
Posted 70 months ago. ( permalink )

janten says:

DenaKel: Eventhough the file names are just number sequences the title- and tag information is still stored inside the file. Most image viewers allow you to see them and they will also re-appear when you upload the photo back to flickr.

jaibatrik: It is only possible to get the resolution of a photo with a known ID, searching by resolution is not possible through the API.

Thanks, just make it easier to have pics stolen why don't you. opting out of API and having all rights Reserved photos on a site that I pay to have my photos on, is still abused and Flickr does nothing about it.... I've just changed my privacy settings to not allow anyone to download my photos because of this app.
I've never been overly concerned about the odd person downloading a full size image for personal uses, and if one of my images ends up being used commercially without my knowledge - I know that's a risk I take putting things on the internet.
However this application just makes it too easy for someone to download a heap of photographs quickly and easily. It has the feel of a microstock site, but hey - everything's free!

I really don't like the direction Flickr is going in allowing uses like this... I know they need to 'commercialise' and make money somehow, but pro users do already pay for hosting space.
I'm contacted quite regularly by people asking to use my photos for X or Y, I almost always agree, and it has been easy for me to simply tell them how to download the full res version. Now I will have to set up a new system or e-mail the photos to them. Flickr is definitely becoming less useful for me.

ρrakaz (Digital Monk) says:

Anyone complaining about photo theft and the likes, please understand that if you upload your photos to Flickr, with or without use of 3rd party apps like this, anyone will be able to download your photos in 5 different sizes - including large (except original) regardless of all the whiz-bang privacy settings of the photo.

Here how to do it:

If the following is the medium size of this photo

farm4.static.flickr.com/3607/3465465593_2c400 48c96.jpg

different sizes can be accessed simply by adding a letter at the end of the photo name, like below!

farm4.static.flickr.com/3607/3465465593_2c400 48c96_s.jpg Square: s
farm4.static.flickr.com/3607/3465465593_2c400 48c96_t.jpg Thumbnail: t
farm4.static.flickr.com/3607/3465465593_2c400 48c96_m.jpg Small: m
farm4.static.flickr.com/3607/3465465593_2c400 48c96_b.jpg Large: b

URL to original files are different and cannot be accessed just by adding a letter.

So you upload large photos at the risk of being accessed by ANYONE, not just these apps.

@Raelyn and Steve: Your error seem to be related to the fact that you have no contacts, not the authentication itself. I will have a look at this tomorrow. In the future please report bugs at the Downloadr discussion thread at flickr.com/groups/api/discuss/169135/ and not here. I regularly read all the topics there and try to answer and fix the bugs as fast as possible. Thank you.

I would like the comments here to be reserved for personal opinions about the tool.

janten says:

By the way, ρrakaz is right: Anyone with a little bit of knowledge of computer programming can easily write a tool to download even the original sizes of nearly any photo within a few hours. If you don't want people to download your photos then you should just not allow them to do so. You can do this by various means in your account preferences. You can set your license to "All rights reserved", you can disallow downloads of your photos, you can keep them out of API calls alltogether if you want. If you apply a CC-license than you should be aware of what this means and what it allows anyone to do with your images.

A very easy way to prevent image theft is by adding a watermark and resize the image to %20 of its full size, most my images are 5-10mp, so %20 is still viewable, the program I use is "Visual Watermark " as it does batches, also you can edit the EXIF data to add contact and copyright info. so far i`ve done 36, only 2300+ to go :(

I wonder how this app would be perceived by the US Government for enforcement of the DMCA with respect to copyrighted property. Facilitating copyright infringement in this manner is something most photographers frown on -- hence all of the negative comments. There is a significant difference between people posting their own IP and "taking the risk" of it being copied, and someone writing software to facilitate the copying. Note that circumventing a protection mechanism is illegal under the DMCA.

center*of*the*universe and other posters' comments justifying copyright infringement by saying that it's a risk you take when you publish anything on the internet is a half truth. If you get mugged walking down the street, is that a risk you take, or someone else committing an illegal act? The question here is facilitation and enforcement.

Have fun!

I am thrilled to find this app. I can't believe that people who have marked their photos as downloadable are complaining when other people download them. I put my photos up on Flickr so that they can be shared with others. As soon as you make something available on the Internet, people will be able to download it. You can make it awkward and difficult, but if people can see it, they can download it. Thanks Janten, for making it easier to share my photos with others.

Excellent suggestion about the batch watermark app - likely someone will come up with it! I seriously needed this app to re-acquire photos that had been wiped from my old hard drive as well - I can't figure why Flickr doesn't make that part of my main account features, really - at least for Pro accounts!
But then years ago Flickr DID have something available for downloading but I couldn't find any current mention of it! I believe it was a backup to DVD app or something that had to be purchased....
Let me know if you do a watermark app - I'd be very interested! Thanks!

I only skimmed the comments before trying Downloadr, but I knew from experience that many free software programs tried to slip add-on programs like toolbars past people during installation, so I was on the lookout or that.

My experience with this program was very brief. After successfully avoiding the installation of a never before heard of toolbar and another program I can't remember, Downloadr wouldn't work for me.

It installed, but couldn't find my Flickr account. I don't know if it was because the app is broken or just sucks or what, but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't work because I refused to install the add-on programs it "offered" me.

I also tried Flicktractr (my review). Both are sorry excuses for software in my opinion.

Very useful app. A cousin took photos of my Uncle's 80th birthday. He uploaded 99 of the best. But how to download them conveniently? Your app did the trick.

The app downloaded and installed .net framework 3.5, which seemed curious since I was pretty sure it was already installed.

Selecting the set was OK but the initial search only found the first 50 images. Hitting the search more button worked but then it threw up a message with an exception error. I hit continue instead of cancel and found that it had discovered the remaining 49 images.

Typing ctrl-A selected the lot and then clicking download selected was all there was to it. Thanks for a very handy app.

If people don't want to share their images then why upload them to Flickr? If you want privacy and backup then put the images into a cloud storage site where nobody can see them.

Heads up! The button above takes you off Flickr to a 3rd party site not reviewed by us. [?]
