Mount Airy Arrow

    Newer Older

My great-grandmother was born in a small town called Mount Airy, TX. When I found that Mount Airy really existed (after, Grandma was young when she lived there), I set out to find it. It had disappeared a number of years ago, but I found a map that still showed it.

A few weeks ago, my husband and I took a road trip to where the town had been located. We drove all around where the town was said to be, but the only indication that there had ever even been a town near here was this sign on a tall post, with "MOUNT AIRY" barely visible.

Are you tracing your family history?

Yes, I am. And like this trip, I keep running into seemingly dead ends, which might lead me somewhere after all. Or not!

And along the way I'm finding some really interesting things.

I've been tracing mine for several years and I have a couple of those brick walls. They are so frustrating especially when I have exhausted all the resources that I know of.

Have you heard about the new Google book search? They have a lot of books online including genealogy books.

And as is required for any discussion of this type, what names are you looking for (and where)?

Nope..I have not heard about the Google book search. I've bought a few books at Borders, but I tend to stick to the magazines for hints and tips. I have found quite a bit of information online. I use Ancestry, Heritage Quest, US Gen Web, Dead Fred, Find a Grave, Tribal Pages, Cindy's List, and RAOGK.

The names I am researching are: Baker, McGhee, Nash, Mathena, Lewis, Willaford, Keith, Connor, Poff, Altizer, & a few others.
