My New Friend Hector
Giant Stag Beetle
I'm back from NC and had an excellent time. While there I made the acquaintance of this handsome fellow, and you KNOW I was excited about that! The first Giant stag beetle I've ever seen! We named him Hector - it just seemed to fit.
About to depart from a group photo at the top of Fontana dam, a girl said something about this HUGE bug she had just seen, and I excitedly asked her "where??" She said, "I'll show you!" and ran me over to the grass next to the parking lot, where this beautiful beetle was clambering through the blades.
After about two seconds of thought, I scooped him up and brought him back to the group to show my dad and whoever else wanted to see. Dropped him in a cup and brought him back to Fontana Village with me.
He spent the next several hours either in the cup or crawling on me or anyone else brave enough (there weren't many!). One little boy was bold enough to take him on his hand and bring him over to show his parents. His mother freaked out and sent him right back to return it, but I think Hector made a new bug-lover out of the boy. =)
After hanging out with me for several hours, he finally opened his beautiful wings and launched. It was an impressive sight to see him silhouetted against the sky as he slowly climbed higher and headed for the trees.
