Manizales: Basílica Inmaculada Concepción
At the center of the Parque Caldas is the monument to Francisco José de Caldas (1768–1816). He was a Colombian lawyer, military engineer, self-taught naturalist, mathematician, geographer and inventor. He was one of the early fighters for Colombian independence and was executed during the Reconquista when royalists attempted to reassert Spanish control at the end of the Napoleonic wars. The monument was erected in 1910.
The Basílica Menor de la Inmaculada Concepción was designed in a neo-gothic style and was constructed in 1909-1921. It features a beautiful wooden interior.
