München: Residenz (Ahnengalerie)
Duke Karl Albrecht had the Ahnengalerie (Ancestral Gallery) built in 1726 which was designed by his court architect Joseph Effner who was trained in France. The young architect François de Cuvilliés was involved in designing the decoration of this magnificent room. The gallery contains over 100 portraits of members of the Wittelsbach family. It did not just serve as a monument to past generations of Wittelsbachs; it also drew attention to the family's wide-ranging connections and to the imperial aspriations of the dynasty.
