Cusco: Convento de la Merced
The two-story cloister of the Convento de la Merced is one of the masterpieces of the Cusco Baroque. It features Cusco's most beautiful arcades. The walls are adorned with paintings from the second half of the 17th century.
The Convento de la Merced was founded in 1535. Both church and convent were destroyed in the earthquake of 1650. The current buildings were constructed from 1657 to 1680. This temple and convent are dedicated to the “Virgen de la Merced” (Virgin of the Merced) also known as “Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes” (Our Lady of the Mercedes).
