St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Built 1734
The St. Thomas church is the oldest church in North Carolina. Built in 1734 in North Carolina's oldest town, Bath (founded 1705). The town was plagued by Indian wars, political rivalry and piracy in its early days. It is probably most famously known as Blackbeard's home. Despite all this, it became NC's first port and in 1746 the (unofficial) colonial capital of NC. When the county government moved away in the late 1700's, Bath lost most of its political and economic power and has remained a very small town until today.
