UP3985

The world's largest operating steam engine. Union Pacific's #3985 'Challenger', steams west from Russellville to Van Buren, AR. The 1 million pound engine is so large it is articulated to assist in making curves, and must stop every 100 miles or so for oil and greasing. The engine is used only for special events and is maintained by retired UP railroad men and train aficionados. (Image scanned from the original medium format transparency.)
